Movies for 15-Year-Olds

Fifteen is when R-rated movies start to come up in earnest, and when a teenager's taste can genuinely overlap with yours. These are films for that stage: sharper, darker and funnier than the ones for younger teens, across crime, horror, comedy, music, anime and true stories, and most of them from the last ten years.

Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is plain: every movie here has a guide age of 14 or 15. At this age the most useful distinction is R for language versus R for what's on screen. Air, Sing Sing and Navalny are rated R almost entirely for swearing and are otherwise fairly mild. Train to Busan and Shaun of the Dead earn theirs largely with blood. And PG-13 doesn't mean gentle: The Dark Knight and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes are among the most intense films on the page.

Each note names what's worth knowing, and the age badge on every title opens its full guide with counts and specifics. For something a step gentler, go back to The Best Movies for 13-Year-Olds; for a step further, see R-rated movies that are OK for older teens. Films about growing up have a list of their own: Coming-of-Age Movies for Teens and Parents.
