The Dark Knight: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and some menace.

A gripping, grim crime thriller that happens to star Batman, best for teens. Heath Ledger's Joker is genuinely unsettling: he kills a thug with a pencil trick, holds knives in people's mouths, burns a man alive and blows up a hospital. A main character dies in an explosion, another is horribly burned and shown with half his face missing, and a child is held at gunpoint in the finale. Language and sexual content are mild and blood is limited, but the sadistic villain and sustained menace are why we'd wait until about 14.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Constant, realistic violence with limited blood: shootings, stabbings, beatings, bombings and a hospital explosion. A thug's head is slammed onto a pencil, a man is set on fire, a bomb is sewn into a henchman, and Batman breaks a man's legs.

Language

Mild

Mild: "son of a bitch," "hell," "ass," "damn" and "goddamn," plus several uses of God's and Jesus' names as exclamations. No f-words or s-words.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A few kisses, a couple caught straightening their clothes after a tryst, low-cut gowns, and ballerinas in bikinis aboard a yacht. No sex scenes or nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Adults drink champagne at parties and liquor in bars, and Alfred offers Harvey a drink for courage. A villain briefly uses a hallucinogenic gas as a weapon. No real drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

The Joker's scarred face and unpredictability create long stretches of dread: knife-in-mouth threats, hostages holding live grenades, and two ferries rigged to explode. A burned face shows exposed muscle and teeth, and a gun is pointed at a boy's head.

Worth talking about

Batman and Gordon hide the truth about a fallen hero to keep the city hopeful. Is it ever right for leaders to lie to the public for its own good?
