Sing Sing: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for language throughout.

A moving, grown-up prison drama for older teens, best watched together and talked over afterward. Men at New York's Sing Sing prison put on a play through a real arts rehabilitation program, and several roles are played by former inmates. There is no sex and almost no on-screen violence, but the swearing is constant, with dozens of f-words and some uses of the n-word. Prisoners recall past crimes and a killing one of them witnessed, and a close friend dies offscreen, bringing raw grief. The R is for language alone, which is why we suggest 15.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

Very little is shown: threats, a shove and a near fight between inmates. Rehearsals include play-acted stabbings with a prop knife, and one man vividly recalls seeing a prisoner's throat cut, but none of it is on screen.

Language

Strong

Strong and constant. Plugged In counted roughly 65 f-words and about 40 s-words, plus motherf--ker, the n-word several times, a homophobic slur one man remembers being called, and milder words like damn and hell.

Sex and nudity

None

No sex, romance or nudity. The men rehearse in T-shirts and boxers, and the group debates whether to admit an applicant who keeps crowding the female volunteers.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

An inmate deals drugs inside the prison, and he tastes the powder in one staged deal before learning it is fake. Men talk about selling drugs, and one regrets how his drug use hurt his grandmother. No drinking is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Tense standoffs between inmates, a man's sobbing breakdown after being denied parole, and the sudden offscreen death of a friend bring intense grief. An inmate's suicide and a dog being put down are mentioned, not shown.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide

Worth talking about

The men use acting to look honestly at who they were and who they want to become. What does the film suggest about second chances and what prisons could do to help people change?
