R-Rated Movies That Are OK for Older Teens

Sooner or later a 15- or 16-year-old wants to watch an R-rated movie with you, and the rating on its own tells you very little. An R can mean a graphic sex scene, a bloodbath, or simply a lot of swearing. These are R-rated films worth sharing with an older teen: great movies rather than edgy ones, where whatever earned the R is something most parents of a 15-year-old can live with.

Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is strict: rated R, with a guide age of 16 or under. Most land at 15. The useful question is why each one got its R. For most of these it's language: Air, BlackBerry, Sing Sing and Once are rated for swearing and almost nothing else. A smaller group is R for violence, including 1917, The Matrix and Train to Busan. None has an explicit sex scene, and where there is sexual material, the note spells it out.

Choose by your teen rather than by the number. A kid who hates blood will be fine with Air and miserable with Train to Busan. Several notes flag suicide, abuse or grief so nothing catches you off guard, and a first R-rated movie is best watched side by side. For films a step younger, see Movies for 15-Year-Olds and PG-13 Movies With No Sex Scenes. For stories about growing up, try Coming-of-Age Movies.
