Movies for 16-Year-Olds
By 16, a teenager can get as much out of a great film as you do. These are films to share at that age: a Best Picture winner from South Korea, The Godfather, a three-hour physics drama, a war film, horror worth arguing about, sharp comedies, an anime landmark and several true stories. Every one is rated R.
Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is strict: every movie here has a guide age of 16. Since they're all R, the useful question is what earned each R. For many it's violence: Saving Private Ryan, Prey and Pan's Labyrinth are graphic but have no sex scenes. Oppenheimer and Lady Bird are close to the reverse, with sex on screen and little violence. The Big Short and Judas and the Black Messiah carry around 100 f-words or more. Each note names the specifics, including sexual assault in Mad Max: Fury Road, Akira and Scream, and suicide in The Iron Claw.
Let your teen help choose; at this age the talk afterward is half the point. For a first R together, The Big Short and Lady Bird have almost no violence, and Prey has almost no swearing. For a step back, see Movies for 15-Year-Olds and R-Rated Movies That Are OK for Older Teens, where most picks land at 15. For younger siblings there's Movies for 14-Year-Olds, and stories about growing up are in Coming-of-Age Movies.
Parasite
Movie · 2019A Best Picture winner a 16-year-old and a parent can argue about for days: a poor Seoul family cons its way into jobs with a rich one. It's very funny until it isn't. The R comes from a bloody climax with stabbings, nearly 25 f-words in the subtitles, and a married couple's sexual touching on a sofa while others hide.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Movie · 2015For a 16-year-old who thinks they've seen every action movie: one long desert chase, made with startling craft. The violence is constant and sometimes gruesome, and the premise is dark: the fleeing women were a tyrant's sexual slaves, made clear but never shown. A pregnant woman dies with her baby. Little swearing and no sex scenes, but partial nudity.
Lady Bird
Movie · 2017A Sacramento senior's last year at home, spent fighting and making up with her mother, plays differently to the teen and the parent watching, which is the point. The R is earned: about 15 f-words and two c-words, a teen's brief first time, a full-frontal magazine shot, teens getting high, and drinking that lands her in the hospital.
Get Out
Movie · 2017A horror film built for a conversation afterward: a Black photographer visits his white girlfriend's family, and their politeness turns sinister. The first hour brings dread, awkward remarks, a dying deer and his guilt over his mother's death; the last act is bloody, with a man impaled on antlers, an exposed brain and a suicide by gunshot. Over 50 f-words and the n-word.
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Movie · 2014Wes Anderson's most broadly funny film: a fussy concierge, his loyal lobby boy and a stolen painting. The pastel look hides an R: more than a dozen f-words, often from the refined lead, a homophobic slur, a split-second image implying oral sex, an elderly woman topless in bed, and sudden gore, including severed fingers and a dead cat.
Oppenheimer
Movie · 2023For a 16-year-old drawn to World War II or physics: three hours of science, politics and dread. Its R is mainly for sex, with several scenes showing a woman's bare breasts, one imagined during a hearing. Expect eight to ten f-words, constant smoking, and a woman briefly shown drowning in a bathtub, treated as suicide. No battle scenes.
Pan's Labyrinth
Movie · 2006Not a children's fairy tale, whatever the fauns suggest: a girl in 1944 Spain escapes her sadistic stepfather into a magical underworld. The real world is the brutal part, with a face smashed by a bottle, close-range shootings, torture and a slashed cheek stitched on screen. The child-eating Pale Man is terrifying. Four f-words; a parent and a child die.
Hot Fuzz
Movie · 2007For a 16-year-old who loved Shaun of the Dead: a top London cop is exiled to a perfect village where accidents keep happening. It's a goofy buddy comedy with shockingly gory deaths, like a head crushed by falling church stone, and a huge shootout. More than 20 f-words, a c-word, underage drinking at the pub, and a suicide in backstory.
Saving Private Ryan
Movie · 1998For a teen studying World War II, still the film that shows most plainly what D-Day cost. The Omaha Beach opening runs about 25 minutes and is extremely graphic: men burned, blown apart and disemboweled. Later, squad members die slowly and up close. Frequent swearing, crude talk about sex but no nudity, and nonstop cigarettes. Talk afterward.
Prey
Movie · 2022A Predator movie that stands on its own: in 1719, a young Comanche woman out to prove herself as a hunter tracks something hunting her. It can be watched with a Comanche-language dub. Swearing is nearly absent and there's no sexual content. The R is all gore: men impaled, beheaded and dismembered, and animals killed and skinned on screen.
The Big Short
Movie · 2015For a teen curious about money: the 2008 crash, explained with jokes and celebrity cameos as a few outsiders bet against the housing market. The R is for roughly 100 f-words and two strip club scenes with topless dancers. One man is haunted by his brother's suicide, glimpsed in a flashback just before the jump. No fights, no illegal drugs.
The Godfather
Movie · 1972A 16-year-old ready for a long classic will see where every mob movie since comes from. Violence earns the R: a machine-gun ambush, a garroting, a car bomb, a wife beaten with a belt, a horse's severed head. An attempted rape is described, and a grandfather dies in front of a small boy. Brief toplessness, a clothed sex scene, mild swearing with slurs.
Scream
Movie · 1996The slasher that mocks slasher rules, and a horror fan of 16 will enjoy catching every reference. It's scary and bloody: repeated stabbings, a gutted body hung from a tree, the principal killed at school and a terrifying opening. The rape and murder of the heroine's mother drives the plot. Dozens of profanities, off-screen teen sex, and drinking at an unsupervised party.
Society of the Snow
Movie · 2023The true story of the 1972 Andes crash, in Spanish, for a teen who can face real horror. The crash is brutal, one young man loses his mother and sister, survivors spend over two months among frozen bodies, and they eat the dead, mostly off screen but with stripped bones shown. Brief non-sexual full-frontal male nudity. Faith and friendship carry it.
Akira
Movie · 1988A landmark of anime and one of its most violent. In a future Tokyo, a teen biker gains psychic powers and turns on everyone, including his best friend. Expect graphic gore, a severed arm and a nightmarish body-horror finale. A gang tries to sexually assault a young woman, ripping her top open to bare her breasts. Teens swallow pills; there are occasional f-words.
Rocketman
Movie · 2019Elton John's life as a fantasy musical, for a teen who loves the songs, and a frank, finally hopeful look at addiction. Nearly 30 f-words and slurs for gay men, cocaine, pills, heavy drinking, bulimia, a lover who punches him, and a suicide attempt with pills and a pool. A brief sex scene between two men shows nudity from the side and behind.
Children of Men
Movie · 2006A bleak, gripping thriller for a teen who follows the news: no baby has been born in 18 years, and a burned-out official still grieving his son must protect a pregnant refugee. Violence is realistic, with refugees caged, executions, burning animal carcasses and a long battle. About 75 f-words, shared marijuana, a state-promoted suicide drug, a graphic birth scene and brief nudity.
The Iron Claw
Movie · 2023A true story for a teen who plays a sport for a demanding parent: the Von Erich wrestling brothers and the father who measured them by wins. It's heavy: two brothers die by suicide, one with pills and one by gunshot with the wound shown, and grief never lets up. About nine f-words, cocaine and pills, a clothed sex scene and shower masturbation.
Hell or High Water
Movie · 2016A smart, unhurried modern Western for a teen who likes gray areas: two brothers rob the bank about to foreclose on their late mother's ranch. Shootouts end in two graphic rifle shots to the head, and a woman is painfully groped off camera. Expect 20 to 30 f-words, a ranger's racist jokes, and a brief, blurry sex scene with nudity.
Judas and the Black Messiah
Movie · 2021For a 16-year-old learning about civil rights: a car thief agrees to spy for the FBI on Black Panther leader Fred Hampton in late-1960s Chicago. It's violent, with shootouts, a point-blank killing, a carved-up chest and a deadly nighttime raid. The language is pervasive, nearly 120 f-words and the n-word. No sex scenes. Closing text notes the informant's suicide.
