Society of the Snow: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violent/disturbing material and brief graphic nudity.

A harrowing, deeply moving true survival story in Spanish for mature teens who can handle real horror. In 1972 a plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby team crashes in the Andes, and the survivors spend more than two months fighting cold, starvation and an avalanche. The crash is brutally realistic, many people die on screen, including loved ones of the survivors, and the starving group decides to eat the bodies of the dead. There is also brief full-frontal male nudity in a non-sexual moment. Faith, friendship and sacrifice are central. The disturbing violence and grief put it at 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

The crash is shown in graphic detail: passengers are crushed by seats, legs snap, one person is impaled and others are sucked out of the plane. Later deaths come from wounds, infection and an avalanche that buries people.

Language

Moderate

Mostly mild in the Spanish with subtitles, such as idiot and jackass. One review counted one f-word and one s-word in the English dub, plus a few misuses of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Strong

No sex. A brief, non-sexual shot shows a man's genitals, and other men's bare backsides are seen. There is a passing remark about breasts and a joke about a girlfriend in a bikini.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Some of the young men drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes in a few scenes, and it is incidental to the story. No drug use is shown.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Sustained and disturbing: survivors live among frozen bodies, people die slowly from wounds, an avalanche fills the wreck at night, and the cannibalism, though mostly off screen, includes shots of stripped bones. One young man loses his mother and sister, another his wife.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The survivors face an impossible choice about eating the dead in order to live. How do they decide what is right, and what role do faith and friendship play?
