Movies Based on True Stories
"Based on a true story" is a promise, and these films keep it: rescues, frauds, startups, trials and survival, chosen because they're gripping as films first and as history second. You'll know how some of them end before you start. The good ones make that not matter.
The most useful thing to know is how true each one is, because it varies a lot. Some stay close to the record: Spotlight, Apollo 13, Thirteen Lives and Society of the Snow are near reconstructions. Others treat the facts as raw material: The Social Network, BlackBerry and Catch Me If You Can invent freely, and in the last case the real man may have invented much of the story himself. The notes say which is which, so you can decide how much to trust what you're watching.
For a family night, Apollo 13 and Hidden Figures are both PG and both great. The heaviest picks are 12 Years a Slave and Killers of the Flower Moon, which also runs nearly three and a half hours. Two are subtitled: I'm Still Here (Portuguese) and Society of the Snow (Spanish). True sports stories have their own page, Sports Movies Even Non-Fans Love, as do music biopics in Musicals and Music Movies and real crimes in True Crime Series and Docs.
Spotlight
Movie · 2015The best newspaper film since All the President's Men, and one of the most faithful films here: the Boston Globe investigation it follows is told almost as procedure. The abuse at its center is discussed, never shown. Quiet, careful and completely gripping, and it won Best Picture.
Apollo 13
Movie · 1995The most rewatchable film on this list. The 1970 moon mission that went wrong, told with such clarity that you follow every air filter and power calculation, and tense even though you know how it ends. Rated PG, close to the real events, and a great pick for curious kids.
Oppenheimer
Movie · 2023Christopher Nolan's three-hour portrait of the man who led the building of the atomic bomb, told as a thriller, a courtroom drama and a tragedy at once. The Trinity test sequence is extraordinary. Talky and dense, but far more gripping than its length suggests. Includes sex scenes with nudity.
Hidden Figures
Movie · 2016Three Black women mathematicians at NASA in the early 1960s, working under segregation while one of them checks the calculations for John Glenn's orbit. Warm, funny and stirring; it compresses and simplifies some of the history but gets the spirit right. Rated PG and great for kids from about eight.
The Social Network
Movie · 2010How Facebook started, as written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by David Fincher: two lawsuits, rapid-fire dialogue and a lonely founder. Mark Zuckerberg has said it gets plenty wrong, and it plays freely with motives, but as drama it's close to flawless. A PG-13 that suits teenagers.
Society of the Snow
Movie · 2023The 1972 Andes plane crash and the survivors' seventy-two days on the glacier, told in Spanish by J.A. Bayona with great care for the people who died. Harrowing and spiritual rather than lurid, it handles the infamous choice the survivors faced with real dignity.
Catch Me If You Can
Movie · 2002Frank Abagnale, a teenager who posed as a pilot, doctor and lawyer while forging checks, chased by a patient FBI agent. Light, stylish fun with Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. Worth knowing: later research suggests Abagnale exaggerated or invented much of his own legend.
The Big Short
Movie · 2015The 2008 financial crash, seen through the oddballs who saw it coming and bet against it. Adam McKay stops the film to have celebrities explain mortgage bonds, which shouldn't work and does. Funny for most of its length and genuinely angry by the end. Constant swearing.
Killers of the Flower Moon
Movie · 2023Martin Scorsese on the murders of Osage people in 1920s Oklahoma for their oil money. Lily Gladstone is the film's quiet center, and Leonardo DiCaprio plays one of the weakest, most compromised men of his career. Nearly three and a half hours and violent: save it for a free evening.
I'm Still Here (2024)
Movie · 2024In early-1970s Rio, a former congressman is taken from his home by the military dictatorship, and his wife Eunice refuses to stop asking what happened. Fernanda Torres is extraordinary. Adapted from their son's memoir, and Brazil's first winner of the Oscar for international feature. In Portuguese.
Sing Sing
Movie · 2023A theater program inside a maximum-security prison, with Colman Domingo leading a cast largely made up of men who went through the real program. Tender, funny and unsentimental, it's about the dignity of putting on a show. One of the best films of its year, and too few people saw it.
BlackBerry
Movie · 2023The rise and fall of the phone that ruled before the iPhone, played as a scrappy workplace comedy that curdles into tragedy. Glenn Howerton is terrifying as the executive who took the company big. It plays loose with the details, but the shape of the story is true.
Thirteen Lives
Movie · 2022Ron Howard's account of the 2018 Thai cave rescue, focused on the volunteer cave divers, most of them British, who swam the trapped boys out. Careful, procedural and almost unbearably tense underwater. If you've seen the documentary The Rescue, this is its dramatized companion, and it stays close to it.
I Swear
Movie · 2025John Davidson, a Scottish man with severe Tourette's who spent decades campaigning for understanding of the condition, played by Robert Aramayo in a BAFTA-winning performance. It's funnier than you'd expect and moving without milking it. Expect a great deal of involuntary swearing, which is rather the point.
Judas and the Black Messiah
Movie · 2021Fred Hampton, the young Black Panther leader in Chicago, and William O'Neal, the FBI informant inside his chapter. Daniel Kaluuya won an Oscar as Hampton and LaKeith Stanfield matches him. A thriller with a political conscience; violent and angry, as it should be.
Lion
Movie · 2016A five-year-old in India falls asleep on a train, ends up lost in Kolkata, and is adopted by an Australian couple. As an adult, he searches for his birth family using Google Earth. Dev Patel is excellent, the story is remarkably faithful, and the ending will wreck you. Fine for most kids from about thirteen.
Dumb Money
Movie · 2023The 2021 GameStop frenzy, when small investors on Reddit squeezed the hedge funds, told as a brisk ensemble comedy with Paul Dano as Keith Gill. It simplifies the finance, but the pandemic-era texture is spot on. A lighter companion to The Big Short.
The Disaster Artist
Movie · 2017The making of The Room, the famously terrible 2003 film, with James Franco as its baffling writer-director Tommy Wiseau. Very funny even if you've never seen The Room, and stranger if you have: the end credits run the real scenes beside the recreations.
Erin Brockovich
Movie · 2000Julia Roberts as the unqualified legal assistant who built a case against a utility for poisoning a California town's water. A crowd-pleaser with a mouth on it, and Roberts won the Oscar. It stays close to the facts, and the real Erin has a cameo as a waitress.
12 Years a Slave
Movie · 2013Solomon Northup, a free Black man from New York kidnapped into slavery in 1841, adapted from his own memoir. Steve McQueen films the brutality without looking away, and some scenes are very hard to watch. It won Best Picture. Not a casual night in, but an essential one.
