Oppenheimer: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for some sexuality, nudity and language.

A dense, three-hour historical drama for older teens interested in World War II and science. It follows J. Robert Oppenheimer from his student days through the Manhattan Project to a hostile security hearing. There is no battle violence, but there are unsettling visions of burned victims, a woman's death by drowning in a bathtub that is presented as suicide, and mounting dread around the bomb test. Parents should know about several sex scenes with a nude woman, including one imagined during a hearing, along with eight to ten f-words and constant smoking. Best for about 16 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Little action. The bomb test is a huge, roaring fireball, and dialogue covers the deaths in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and firebombed cities. A woman is briefly shown drowning in a bathtub, and Oppenheimer injects an apple with poison before stopping anyone from eating it.

Language

Strong

Plugged In counted eight f-words and four s-words, and Movieguide at least ten f-words, plus 'damn,' 'hell,' 'ass,' 'crap' and repeated misuse of God's and Jesus' names. Much of the dialogue is dense scientific and political talk.

Sex and nudity

Strong

Several sex scenes show a woman's bare breasts and sexual movement, plus conversation in bed while she is topless. In one symbolic scene Oppenheimer sits naked at his hearing with a woman on top of him. His affairs run through the story.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Oppenheimer smokes cigarettes and a pipe almost constantly, and others smoke throughout. Characters drink often, and his wife is shown leaning on alcohol. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Haunting rather than scary: visions of a woman's face peeling away and a charred body, a pounding score around the bomb test, and the dread of mass destruction. A former lover's death, treated as suicide, is shown briefly with her head under the bathwater.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide

Worth talking about

Scientists raced to build the bomb because they feared the Nazis would get there first. Ask your teen whether the people who invent something dangerous are responsible for how it gets used.
