American Nightmare: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A tense, infuriating three-part docuseries for older teens, about a California couple whose 2015 home invasion and kidnapping police dismissed as a hoax. Through interviews and reenactments, the woman describes being abducted, held for two days and raped twice, while her boyfriend is treated as a murder suspect. Expect frequent f-words, frank discussion of sexual violence and invasive rape exams, and a frightening break-in. It is also a story about not being believed, which is worth discussing. The sustained focus on sexual assault is why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongA masked intruder drugs and ties up a couple and abducts the woman, who is raped twice; the assaults are discussed at length and partly reenacted but not shown graphically. A later home invasion leaves another man with a head wound.
Language
StrongStrong language is frequent and repeated in the interviews, including f-words, s-words, "a--hole" and "pissed," along with "hell" and "ass."
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex scenes or nudity. The couple's romance and his former partner come up; the sexual assault itself is covered under violence.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateThe kidnapper forces the couple to take a sedative during the break-in, and there are conversations about being under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongThe break-in and abduction are reenacted with mounting dread, the woman is held captive for days under threat, and hostile police questioning adds to the distress. Especially upsetting for viewers sensitive to home invasion.
Sensitive topics
- Sexual assault
Worth talking about
Police and reporters assumed the couple was lying. Talk about why people sometimes disbelieve victims, and how that makes their trauma worse.
