A brutal revenge thriller for adults and the oldest teens only. Dev Patel plays a young man in a fictional Indian city who fights in an underground ring while plotting to kill the corrupt men who murdered his mother. Fights are long and bloody, with stabbings, burnings and beatings. A recurring flashback shows a police chief attack his mother, intending to rape her, then set her and their home on fire while the boy watches. A chase through a brothel crashes past couples having sex with nudity, cocaine is snorted, and there are about 65 f-words. Age 17 reflects the sexual violence, graphic fights and sexual content together.

In flashback, a police chief attacks the hero's mother intending to rape her, then beats her and sets her and their home on fire. A club guest forces his hand between an unwilling woman's legs.

Language

Strong

Constant and harsh throughout. One count found about 65 f-words, plus "motherf--ker," s-words, "a--hole," "b--ch" and "whore."

Sex and nudity

Strong

Fleeing through a brothel, the hero bursts past couples having sex, shown in quick glimpses with nudity. Wealthy clients grope escorts without consent, and there are crude sexual remarks, talk of arranging an abortion for a pregnant escort and nude paintings.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Relentless and grim. The flashback to his mother's murder and the burning house returns again and again, a child burns his hands on flaming fuel, a bullet is cut out and the wound cauterized, and someone nearly drowns.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The film draws on the Hanuman myth and shows leaders who win power by targeting outsiders. Can revenge ever count as justice, or does it just repeat the harm?
