Action Movies With Real Craft
Plenty of action movies are loud. Far fewer are well made: fights you can follow, stunts someone actually performed, and set pieces built like a good joke, with a setup, an escalation and a payoff. These are the films where you can see the craft, and where the action tells you something about the people doing it.
Two traditions run through the list. One is the stunt: Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Top Gun: Maverick and Jackie Chan's Police Story get their charge from knowing someone really did that. The other is the fight: The Raid, John Wick, Kill and The Furious are choreography first, shot wide enough to follow every blow. Mad Max: Fury Road does both at once, which is why it leads.
Violence varies enormously. The Raid, Kill, Monkey Man and The Furious are brutal; Raiders of the Lost Ark and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse work for most families, and Top Gun: Maverick is the easy choice for families with young teens. Several are subtitled, which the notes flag. For tension over adrenaline, see Best Thrillers to Watch Tonight; for robberies and getaways, Crime and Heist Movies.
Mad Max: Fury Road
Movie · 2015The benchmark for modern action. George Miller staged most of it for real, with actual vehicles and performers in the desert, and kept the important action near the center of every frame, so your eye never has to hunt. That's why two hours of chaos never once becomes confusing.
Mission: Impossible – Fallout
Movie · 2018The peak of Tom Cruise's stunt era: a real high-altitude skydive, a helicopter chase he flew himself, and a rooftop jump that broke his ankle and stayed in the film. Christopher McQuarrie strings the set pieces so each tops the last. Having seen Rogue Nation helps, but isn't essential.
Top Gun: Maverick
Movie · 2022The most crowd-pleasing film here and a feat of filmmaking: the actors really were up in fighter jets, and you can see the G-forces on their faces. Tom Cruise returns to train a new generation of Navy pilots for a near-impossible strike. Earnest, old-fashioned and thrilling, and mild enough for families with young teens.
John Wick
Movie · 2014A retired hitman, Keanu Reeves, is pushed back into work over a stolen car and a dog. Directed by Reeves's former stunt double, it brought long, legible gunfights back to American action. The first is the leanest; the sequels get bigger and stranger, and Chapter 4 is the grandest. Very violent.
Die Hard
Movie · 1988The Christmas Eve office-tower siege that a generation of action films was pitched as a variation on. Bruce Willis's cop is barefoot, outgunned and talking to himself, which makes him easy to root for, and Alan Rickman's villain is the best in the genre. Still lean and clever.
RRR
Movie · 2022Over three hours of the most joyously over-the-top action ever filmed: two revolutionaries in 1920s British India, a friendship, and a song-and-dance number that won an Oscar. S. S. Rajamouli stages each set piece as if trying to top the whole history of cinema. Telugu with subtitles; take an intermission.
The Raid
Movie · 2011A police squad fights its way up a Jakarta tower block owned by a crime lord, floor by floor. Iko Uwais's silat fights are so fast and so clearly shot that they reset what audiences expected from martial arts films. Released in the US as The Raid: Redemption. Indonesian with subtitles, and extremely violent.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Movie · 2024A prequel that's more saga than chase: Furiosa grows up across years of the wasteland, played first by Alyla Browne and then by Anya Taylor-Joy, with Chris Hemsworth as a gloriously vain warlord. Slower than Fury Road, but its long assault on a War Rig is as good as anything in the series. Underseen in theaters, and worth catching up with.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Movie · 1991James Cameron's sequel turned the killer of the first film into the protector. The liquid-metal T-1000 still looks remarkable, and Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor remade what an action heroine could be. The truck chase down a concrete flood channel is a lesson in clear, escalating action.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Movie · 1981Spielberg's adventure is still the model for set pieces that are funny and thrilling at once: the boulder, the truck chase, the swordsman in the market. Harrison Ford makes Indiana Jones look as if he's improvising. Rated PG, but the face-melting finale frightens some younger kids.
Baby Driver
Movie · 2017Edgar Wright's getaway movie is cut to its soundtrack: the young driver at its center has tinnitus and plays music constantly, so chases, gunshots and footsteps land on the beat. The car chases are real and superb. An exercise in style more than story, and a very fun one.
Monkey Man
Movie · 2024Dev Patel directed himself as a young man who fights in an underground ring wearing a monkey mask while planning revenge on the men who destroyed his family. Ragged, furious and steeped in Indian myth, it's the most personal film here. Extremely violent, especially in its final act.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Movie · 2018Animation lets the action do what live action can't: frames that look like comic panels, sound effects as onscreen text, and several art styles fighting in a single shot. The final collider sequence is built as carefully as anything here. The pick for a family action night.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Movie · 2000Ang Lee's martial arts romance made wire-work fights look like ballet. The treetop duel in the bamboo forest is the famous one, but the weapon-switching fight between Michelle Yeoh and Zhang Ziyi is the better action scene. Mandarin with subtitles, and more romantic and melancholy than anything else here.
Rebel Ridge
Movie · 2024A former Marine has his cash seized by small-town police and slowly runs out of patience. Jeremy Saulnier turns the expected revenge film into a tense, intelligent thriller whose hero spends most of his time trying not to hurt anyone. Aaron Pierre is superb in the lead. Violent when it erupts.
Nobody
Movie · 2021Bob Odenkirk as a dull suburban dad who turns out to be far more dangerous than he looks. From the writer of John Wick, it's shorter, funnier and scrappier, and the early fight on a city bus is a highlight: messy and painful, with every hit seeming to hurt both sides. Bloody, and great fun.
The Fall Guy
Movie · 2024A love letter to stunt performers from a director who used to be one. Ryan Gosling plays a battered stuntman pulled into a missing-star mystery on his ex's film set, with Emily Blunt as the ex. The plot is slight; the record-breaking car roll and the banter are not. Rated PG-13.
Kill
Movie · 2023Almost the whole film takes place on a train bound for New Delhi, where an army commando fights a gang of armed robbers carriage by carriage. The violence is among the most graphic on this list, and the choreography in those cramped spaces is astonishing. Hindi with subtitles.
The Furious
Movie · 2025The newest pick and a gift to fight fans: a mute father hunts for his kidnapped daughter alongside a man whose journalist wife has vanished, and the cast is stacked with martial artists, including Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian from The Raid. Thin story, extraordinary choreography. Largely in English, with some Mandarin and sign language. Very violent.
Police Story
Movie · 1985Jackie Chan directed and starred, and the climax in a shopping mall, glass shattering everywhere, is one of the most dangerous stunt sequences ever filmed. His slide down a pole strung with lights burned his hands, and stunt teams still study it. Cantonese with subtitles; the comedy is broad.
Edge of Tomorrow
Movie · 2014Tom Cruise as a cowardly officer forced into an alien war who relives the same day every time he dies. The time loop turns repetition into comedy and the action into a learning curve, and Emily Blunt is terrific as the soldier training him. Sold on home video as Live Die Repeat.
