Nobody: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for strong violence and bloody images, language throughout and brief drug use.

A darkly comic, ultraviolent revenge thriller for older teens and adults. Bob Odenkirk plays a seemingly meek suburban dad whose hidden past as a government assassin resurfaces after a home burglary, sparking a war with the Russian mob. The violence escalates from bloody brawls to close-range shootings, throat slashings and a booby-trapped factory, getting gorier as it goes. There are about 40 f-words, a crime boss snorts cocaine, and blackmail photos briefly show a man in a bondage setup. Age 16 reflects the graphic, gleeful violence and strong language.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Graphic and escalating. Men are stabbed, strangled, shot in the head at close range and impaled on rebar, a throat is sliced open, and a mine blast leaves a man's face a bloody ruin. A house is torched with bodies inside.

Language

Strong

Heavy. One count found about 40 f-words and close to 10 s-words, plus "b--ch," "a--hole" and God's name paired with "damn" several times.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

No sex scenes. A man tells his wife their sex life has faded, and blackmail photos briefly show a federal agent in his underwear in a bondage setup with a dominatrix whose outfit bares her backside.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

A Russian crime boss snorts cocaine and drinks constantly in his nightclub. Drunk thugs crash a car and board a bus with open bottles. The hero drinks wine and hard liquor, and smoking is made to look cool.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

A nighttime burglary puts the family in danger, and the home is later attacked by armed men. On a bus, drunk men surround a young woman and make clear they intend to molest her until the hero steps in. The tone stays playful as bodies pile up.

Worth talking about

Hutch feels like a failure until violence makes him feel alive again. What does the film suggest about masculinity, and why might audiences cheer for a man who goes looking for a fight?
