Evil: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated TV-MA.
A smart, creepy supernatural procedural for older teens that becomes far more adult after its first season. A skeptical psychologist, a priest-in-training and a tech expert investigate possessions and miracles for the Catholic Church. Season 1 aired on CBS and stays near broadcast limits, but the Paramount+ seasons add frequent f-words, sex scenes with partial nudity and darker plots. Across the run there are throat-slitting murders, a rape that is heard rather than seen, a boy killed by his parents, a pedophile villain and stories built around suicide. Seasons 1 and 2 carry TV-14 and seasons 3 and 4 TV-MA, so we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongA serial killer slits throats, mostly off camera, and a rape is heard but not shown. Also beatings, a severed finger, gory crime-scene photos, a stabbing video and heavy bleeding during Mass. A boy is killed by his parents, and a man cuts the baby from his murdered wife.
Language
StrongSeason 1 sticks to words like damn, hell and bitch. The streaming seasons are much harsher: Plugged In counted eight f-words in a season 3 episode and 21 in a season 4 episode, plus s-words and frequent misuse of God's name.
Sex and nudity
ModerateSeason 1 has romantic tension and a demon's crude come-ons. Later seasons show sex scenes with moaning, lingerie and partly exposed breasts, including a married couple on a kitchen counter and a main character's encounter with a demon. Crude sexual talk throughout.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongAdults drink wine and canned margaritas without getting drunk. Starting in season 1, the priest-in-training takes hallucinogens to bring on religious visions, and the trips are shown on screen. Two leads are also unknowingly drugged in one episode.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongDemonic possession, exorcisms, a goat-headed devil and a demon who visits a woman in her bed create steady dread. Nightmares and hallucinations blur with reality, and a storyline about a supposedly possessed fetus is especially disturbing.

Worth talking about
The show keeps asking whether evil is supernatural or simply human. Ask your teen how the skeptic and the believer explain the same events, and which explanation they find more convincing.
