Ready or Not: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence, bloody images, language throughout, and some drug use.
A gory, darkly funny horror thriller for older teens: on her wedding night, a bride learns her husband's wealthy family must hunt her down by dawn as part of a satanic bargain. The violence is bloody and frequent, with people shot in the face, impaled by crossbow bolts and bursting apart in gore, and children in the family join the hunt. Language is relentless, with more than 60 f-words, and one character snorts cocaine and pops pills. Sexual content is limited to a heated moment in bed. For the gore and language, we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongGraphic and frequent: a young boy in the family shoots the bride through the hand, she is stabbed and gashed on metal, others are shot in the face, impaled through the mouth, beheaded offscreen, crushed and strangled, and several people explode in gore.
Language
StrongConstant: one count found more than 60 f-words and 30 s-words, plus motherf----r, a--hole and bitch, a man calling his wife a gold-digging whore, and about ten misuses of God's or Jesus' name.
Sex and nudity
MildA newlywed couple kisses heavily in bed and she starts on his pants before a relative interrupts. There is crude talk about their sex life and a drunk brother-in-law's passes, but no nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongA sister-in-law snorts cocaine and swallows prescription pills, a brother-in-law is drunk throughout, and the heroine and others smoke cigarettes often. One man spikes the family's drink and they vomit.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongA sustained cat-and-mouse hunt through a dark mansion, with jump scares, a pit holding earlier victims' corpses, hooded figures chanting at a satanic ritual, and the bride tied down to be sacrificed.
Worth talking about
Grace marries into money and finds the family's fortune rests on a terrible bargain. What does the film say about privilege, family loyalty and what people will do to keep what they have?
