Horror Comedies
A good horror comedy does two hard jobs at once: it lands the joke and it still makes you flinch. These are the ones that manage both, for nights when the room wants a scary movie but nobody wants to go to bed miserable. They're also the best way in for friends who insist they "don't do horror".
The useful question is which side wins. Some are comedies in horror's clothes: What We Do in the Shadows, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil and Werewolves Within are barely scary at all. Others are real horror films with a sense of humor, and they will still get you: An American Werewolf in London, Drag Me to Hell and Deadstream all have moments that send people over the back of the couch. Ready or Not, Abigail and The Monkey sit in the middle, laughing and splattering in equal measure.
Funny doesn't mean clean. Most of these are made for adults, and several are gorier than straight horror, because a big enough splash of blood becomes a punchline. The notes flag the messy ones. For the gentlest start, try Shaun of the Dead or Happy Death Day. For scares with no jokes attached, see The Best Horror Movies of the 2020s; for laughs with no blood at all, Funny Movies.
Shaun of the Dead
Movie · 2004The standard every film on this page gets measured against. Edgar Wright stages a zombie outbreak as a slacker comedy about a man who can't get his life together, and the jokes and the zombie plot pay off in the same scenes. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost at their best. Plenty of British swearing, all of it cheerful.
What We Do in the Shadows
Movie · 2014Vampire flatmates in Wellington, New Zealand, filmed like a fly-on-the-wall documentary as they bicker about the dishes and try to get into nightclubs. Almost no scares, plenty of comic sprays of blood, and the most quotable film here. If it clicks, the TV spin-off runs on the same joke for years.
Ready or Not
Movie · 2019A bride's wedding night turns into a game of hide-and-seek with her new in-laws, who are rich, armed and very serious about family tradition. Samara Weaving gives a ferociously funny performance in a shredded wedding dress, and the satire of old money has real teeth. Bloody throughout, and the ending goes all the way.
The Cabin in the Woods
Movie · 2011Five college friends, one remote cabin, every cliché you expect. Then the film shows you why the clichés exist, and turns into a gleeful argument about the whole genre. Know as little as possible going in. Shot before Chris Hemsworth was famous and shelved for years, it gets far gorier in its last act.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil
Movie · 2010Two kind-hearted hillbillies fixing up a vacation cabin get mistaken for killers by panicking college kids, who then keep dying in accidents of their own making. It's one joke, flipped from every angle, and it never runs dry. Gory in a slapstick way; the wood chipper scene is the one people quote.
Freaky
Movie · 2020A shy high schooler and a hulking serial killer swap bodies thanks to a cursed dagger, and Vince Vaughn spends the film playing a teenage girl with total commitment. It works as a real slasher, with properly brutal kills, and as a sweet comedy about a girl learning to take up space. Same director as Happy Death Day.
Happy Death Day
Movie · 2017A mean college student is murdered on her birthday and wakes up to live the same day again, and again, until she unmasks the killer in the baby-face mask. Groundhog Day as a slasher, PG-13 and very light on blood, which makes it the easiest first step on this list. The sequel leans even harder into comedy.
Bodies Bodies Bodies
Movie · 2022Rich twentysomethings at a hurricane party play a murder game in the dark, then someone turns up actually dead, and the group's real talent turns out to be blaming each other. The horror is modest; the comedy is a vicious satire of how this generation argues. Rachel Sennott steals it. Heavy swearing and drug use.
Abigail
Movie · 2024A crew of kidnappers snatch a young ballerina for ransom and lock themselves in a mansion with her, which the trailer already told you was a mistake: she's a vampire. From the team behind Ready or Not, and one of the bloodiest films on this page, with people bursting like water balloons. Dan Stevens is having enormous fun.
The Monkey
Movie · 2025Wind up the toy monkey, it bangs its drum, and someone nearby dies in an absurd, elaborate accident. Osgood Perkins, who made the grim Longlegs, turns a Stephen King short story into a deadpan black comedy about grief and twin brothers who can't stand each other. The deaths are gory and played as punchlines.
Send Help
Movie · 2026Sam Raimi back in Drag Me to Hell mode, more or less. After a plane crash, a downtrodden employee and her obnoxious boss wash up on a desert island, where her survival skills suddenly put her in charge. Rachel McAdams is wonderful. More savage workplace comedy than scary, with a few Raimi gross-outs to remind you who made it.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come
Movie · 2026Picks up immediately after the first film, with Grace now protecting her estranged sister while a council of rich, rival families hunts them both. Bigger, louder and a little more familiar, but Samara Weaving is still the best final girl working, and Sarah Michelle Gellar joins the fun. Watch Ready or Not first; this one assumes you have.
Werewolves Within
Movie · 2021A snowed-in Vermont town, a pipeline dispute, a houseful of suspicious neighbors and something big and hairy in the woods. Sam Richardson plays a painfully nice forest ranger trying to keep the peace. A whodunit first and a creature feature second, light on scares with a few bloody surprises. Good for a group that loves Clue.
M3GAN
Movie · 2022A roboticist builds her orphaned niece a lifelike AI doll, and the doll takes the job of protecting the girl far too seriously. Knowingly camp, with a viral hallway dance and lines delivered like a sassy chatbot. The theatrical cut is PG-13 and light on blood, so it suits a mixed group of teens and adults.
Zombieland
Movie · 2009A neurotic college kid survives the zombie apocalypse by following a list of rules, then teams up with Woody Harrelson, who is mostly looking for Twinkies. Breezier and less sad than Shaun of the Dead, with plenty of splatter and one celebrity cameo that is still the best scene. Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg just before they got big.
Evil Dead II
Movie · 1987Bruce Campbell fights his own possessed hand in a cabin in the woods, and Sam Raimi films it like a Three Stooges short drenched in fake blood. Half remake, half sequel to The Evil Dead, and far funnier than the original. The homemade effects are a big part of the charm. Every splatter comedy since owes it something.
An American Werewolf in London
Movie · 1981Two American backpackers ignore a warning on the Yorkshire moors, and one survives to discover what bit him. John Landis mixes deadpan jokes with nightmare sequences that are genuinely frightening, and Rick Baker's transformation scene, done entirely with practical effects, still holds up. Includes nudity, a sex scene and a gruesome finale.
Drag Me to Hell
Movie · 2009A loan officer denies an old woman an extension on her mortgage and gets cursed for it. Sam Raimi's PG-13 horror runs on jump scares and gross-out gags (an eyeball, embalming fluid, a great many things in mouths) rather than blood, and audiences laugh and scream at the same moments. A great pick for a group.
Housebound
Movie · 2014A young woman sentenced to house arrest in her mother's creaky New Zealand home starts to suspect it's haunted, and her mother cheerfully agrees. Lesser-known and very funny, with a plot that keeps heading somewhere you don't expect. It's from Gerard Johnstone, who later made M3GAN. The last act gets surprisingly violent.
Deadstream
Movie · 2022A disgraced YouTuber livestreams a night alone in a haunted house to win back his followers, and the whole film is his stream. He's an insufferable coward, which is the joke. The scares are real, though: this is the jumpiest film on the list, and the creature design gets genuinely nasty as the night wears on.
