Zombieland: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for horror violence/gore and language.

A gory, profane zombie road-trip comedy best saved for older teens who like their horror played for laughs. Four survivors, including a 12-year-old girl, cross a zombie-overrun America, and nearly every scene features zombies being shot, clubbed or crushed, with blood and guts splashed everywhere. Expect around 30 f-words, a zombie stripper in pasties and a g-string, and adults smoking marijuana while the girl sits nearby. A character grieves the death of his young son, and a famous cameo ends in an accidental shooting. The jokey tone softens the scares but not the gore or language, so we suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Constant, cartoonishly gory zombie kills: heads smashed with bats and a banjo, shotgun and machine-gun blasts, a piano dropped on a zombie. Zombies tear into and eat victims, a woman flies through a windshield, and a man is accidentally shot dead.

Language

Strong

About 30 f-words and 15 s-words by one count, plus motherf---er, bitch, ass, bastard and hell, and God's name misused around ten times. Crude sexual slang comes up in jokes.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A zombie stripper in only pasties and a g-string is shown in slow motion. Tallahassee jokes crudely about sex, two leads share a brief kiss, and the men appear shirtless. No sex scenes.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Strong

Adults smoke marijuana from a bong in one scene while the 12-year-old is in the room. Tallahassee swigs hard liquor several times, and two characters share a bottle of wine.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Jump scares and sudden zombie attacks, child zombies included, plus a nighttime finale at an amusement park. The comic tone lightens the dread, but a scene of Tallahassee weeping over his dead son is genuinely sad.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child
