Freaky: parents' guide

16+our pick

Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for strong bloody horror violence, sexual content, and language throughout.

A gory, raunchy body-swap horror comedy for older teens who like their laughs mixed with blood. A bullied high schooler trades bodies with a hulking serial killer, who then uses her face to murder classmates and a teacher. Kills are elaborate and gruesome, from a table saw to a wine bottle forced down a throat. Language is constant, with about three dozen f-words and a c-word. Teens have a brief sex scene without nudity, there's crude humor about the swap, and a group of boys plans to sexually assault the girl's body before it goes wrong for them. We suggest 16.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Elaborate, bloody kills: a chainsaw, a teacher sawed in half on a table saw, a wine bottle shoved down a throat, a head crushed with a toilet seat, and a decapitation. Boys lure the girl's body to a secluded spot intending to assault her; no assault happens.

Language

Strong

Plugged In counted at least 36 f-words, 16 s-words and one c-word, plus slurs, sexual insults, a rape joke, rude gestures and many misuses of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Two teens have sex standing up, made clear through thrusting and talk but without nudity. Expect crude jokes about the swapped bodies, unwanted groping, a football player forcing a kiss on a gay teen, same-sex and opposite-sex kissing, and sexual graffiti.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

The lead's widowed mother drinks heavily enough to pass out. Teens get drunk at a party, a man asks to buy drugs, and graffiti shows a marijuana leaf.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Played largely for dark laughs, but there are chases, jump scares, a teen girl in serious danger and lingering shots of mangled bodies. Millie and her mother are also still grieving her father's recent death.

Sensitive topics

  • Sexual assault
  • Bullying
  • School violence
  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Millie is mocked and ignored at school until the killer in her body changes how people see her. Talk about how appearance and confidence shape the way others treat us.
