Bodies Bodies Bodies: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence, bloody images, drug use, sexual references and pervasive language.
A sharp, darkly comic whodunit for older teens about rich young friends whose hurricane party turns deadly when a murder-mystery game goes wrong during a blackout. It is less gory than a slasher, but several people die bloodily and their bodies are shown. The bigger concerns are nearly nonstop f-words, heavy drinking and cocaine use, including a character fresh out of rehab who relapses, plus lots of making out and sexual talk. For the language and drug use, we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSeveral friends die from a sword wound, falls (one onto broken bottles), a blow from a heavy weight and gunshots. Blood, a disfigured face and bullet wounds are shown, and slaps and scuffles are played for laughs.
Language
StrongPervasive: one count found about 140 f-words and 13 s-words, plus ass, bitch, d--k, p---y and roughly 30 misuses of God's or Jesus' name. A character also uses a slur for lesbians about herself.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTwo young women kiss at length and one grabs the other's crotch, others make out and dance suggestively, and a man playing dead is revived by having a bottle rubbed on his crotch. Lots of sexual talk, but no nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongConstant drinking of shots and champagne, often to drunkenness. Characters snort cocaine on screen and take pills, one woman just out of rehab relapses, and another accidentally eats pot-laced treats. Vaping is shown too.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateTense rather than terrifying: friends stumble through a dark mansion by phone light, find bloody bodies, and turn on each other with paranoia and weapons. A few jump scares.
Sensitive topics
- Addiction
Worth talking about
The friends quickly turn on one another, using buzzwords about trauma and privilege as weapons. How does the film show suspicion and online habits poisoning a friendship?
