Totally Killer: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for bloody violence, language, sexual material, and teen drug/alcohol use.
A time-travel slasher comedy for older teens, playful in tone but bloody and crude. After her mother is murdered, a teenager jumps back to 1987 to stop the masked killer who stabbed three girls that year. Expect repeated on-screen stabbings with spurting blood, about 25 f-words, constant sex jokes and a near hookup, and plenty of teen drinking, joints and pot brownies. A drunk teen also dies in a car crash, and popular kids bully others. The mix of violence, partying and the mother's death is why we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
StrongA masked killer stabs victims 16 times each, with spurting blood and exaggerated stabbing sounds. A reporter is knifed in the head on live TV and a throat is slit. Also fights with bats and a nail gun, and a fatal drunk-driving crash.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted about 25 f-words, over a dozen s-words and roughly 50 misuses of God's name, plus 'bitch,' one compound f-word, a homophobic joke and several middle-finger gestures.
Sex and nudity
ModerateFrequent sexual jokes, including teen girls comparing notes on oral sex, and a teen couple who make out and nearly have sex on a waterbed. Teens sit naked in a hot tub, shown only from the shoulders up.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongTeens binge on wine coolers and vodka, smoke joints and cigarettes, and eat pot brownies, one batch given to others without warning. A mother smokes pot in front of her young daughters, and a drunk teen drives and dies in a crash.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateJump scares, a masked stalker and chases, but the comic tone keeps dread in check. The opening murder of the heroine's mother is the most upsetting moment.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Jamie is shocked by how casually the 1980s teens joke about weight, sexuality and drunk driving. Ask your teen which attitudes have changed since then, and which haven't.
