Final Destination Bloodlines: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for strong violent/grisly accidents, and language.
A gory, darkly comic horror sequel for older teens who enjoy squirming through elaborate death scenes. A college student learns her family is being hunted by Death itself because her grandmother once prevented a deadly tower collapse. Almost every death is shown in graphic, lingering detail, from impalements and crushings to a face shredded by a lawn mower, and the language includes about 20 f-words. Sex and drug content are minimal. Parents die in front of their children, teens and young adults are killed, and a terminally ill grandmother deliberately lets herself be killed. Age 16 reflects the nonstop gore.
What's in it
Violence
StrongRelentless, graphic accidents. An opening disaster shows people burning, falling and impaled. Later victims are crushed by a garbage compactor and falling logs, stripped of piercings and folded into an MRI machine, and speared through the head. Severed limbs, blood spatter and an autopsy.
Language
StrongFrequent: one review counted about 20 f-words and 15 s-words, plus "bitch," "bastard," "asshole," "son of a bitch," about a dozen misuses of God's name and a middle-finger gesture.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sex or nudity. A young couple deal with an unplanned pregnancy and a proposal, a man learns he was born from an affair, and one character makes a crude thrusting gesture as a joke.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults drink wine and champagne at a restaurant and beer at a family barbecue, and someone is briefly seen smoking. Melatonin is suggested as a sleep aid. No drunkenness or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained dread and jump scares as each relative waits to die, with near-misses drawn out for suspense. A grandmother with terminal cancer chooses to let herself be killed to prove her warning, and children watch a parent die.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Suicide
Worth talking about
Ask whether the film turns death into a game, and what the family's efforts to save one another say about what people will risk for those they love.
