Heart Eyes: parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for strong violence and gore, language and some sexual content.
A slasher romantic comedy for older teens and adults that pairs a meet-cute with very gory kills. Two coworkers mistaken for a couple are hunted on Valentine's Day by a masked killer who targets lovers. The deaths are inventive and splattery, including a woman crushed in a wine press and a beheading, and the dialogue is packed with f-words. A couple is heard having loud sex, another couple is killed mid-sex with the man shown shirtless, and the leads start to hook up before being interrupted. Drinking is limited to champagne and cocktails. The playful tone does not soften the gore, which is why we suggest 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongOver-the-top gore throughout: a knife through a camera lens into an eye, arrows to faces, a woman pulped in a wine press, a beheading, a couple killed with a metal rod mid-sex, an officer impaled on a flagpole, and a machete to the groin.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted about 35 f-words and a dozen s-words; Movieguide counted about 45 f-words among at least 57 obscenities. Also 'motherf--ker,' 'bitch,' 'prick' and 'd--k,' a middle-finger gesture, and 'Jesus' used as an exclamation.
Sex and nudity
ModerateOff screen, a couple in a van at a drive-in has long, loud sex while the leads hide up front. Another couple is killed mid-sex, the man bare from the waist up; no other nudity. The leads start undressing before an interruption. Crude sex talk.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults drink champagne and cocktails at dinner and at an office party, and one character gulps a glass. No drug use or smoking is noted.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA masked killer stalks couples through a city at night, with chases, jump scares and bloody crime scenes, though jokes and romance break the tension.
Worth talking about
The film pokes fun at grand romantic gestures and the holiday pressure to be part of a couple. Ask your teen how real romance differs from the movie version.
