Deadstream: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Not formally rated.

A found-footage horror comedy for older teens who can handle real scares: a disgraced internet streamer locks himself in a haunted house overnight to win back his audience. It's often funny, but the second half is a long run of jump scares and attacks by rotting, demonic corpses, with bloody biting, stabbing and slashing. The ghost at the center is a woman who died by suicide, spirits try to push the hero to kill himself, and he cuts off his own finger in a ritual. Swearing is lighter than in most horror, with only occasional f-words. Unrated in the US; best for 15 and up.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

Possessed corpses bite, stab, slash and strangle, and a man's head is slammed against a wall. The hero tends a bleeding leg wound and, in the climax, deliberately cuts off one of his own fingers. Much of it is in dim light.

Language

Moderate

The BBFC describes the f-word as infrequent, with other strong words implied or cut off, alongside regular use of shit, bitch, pussy, crap, damn and hell.

Sex and nudity

Mild

No sexual content. A rotting female corpse is briefly seen with bare breasts, in a horror rather than sexual context.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Drug paraphernalia, including syringes and spoons, is found in the abandoned house. No one is shown drinking or using drugs.

Scary or intense scenes

Strong

Long stretches in a dark house as ghosts, possessed corpses and a ghoul chase a terrified man, with frequent jump scares. Spirits try to drive him to suicide, and the backstory centers on a woman who took her own life.
