M3GAN: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for violent content and terror, some strong language and a suggestive reference.
A slick, darkly funny killer-doll movie for young teens who enjoy horror. After a girl's parents die in a car crash, her robotics-engineer aunt gives her a lifelike AI companion doll that becomes ruthlessly protective. The doll kills several people, including a boy who bullies the girl, and is implied to kill a neighbor's dog. Much of the violence stays just off-screen, but a torn-off ear is grisly and the creepy menace keeps building. Language includes a handful of s-words and one f-word; sex and drinking are negligible. Age 13 reflects the scares and the deaths of the girl's parents and a child.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSeveral killings: a woman is shot with a nail gun and sprayed with a burning chemical, two men are stabbed off-screen and found bloody, and a boy loses an ear before a car hits him. A man nearly hangs. An unrated home cut is bloodier.
Language
ModerateMovieguide counted 16 obscenities, mostly s-words plus one f-word, along with 'bullshit,' 'bitch,' 'dick,' and 'Jesus Christ' used as an exclamation several times.
Sex and nudity
MildNo sexual content beyond a passing reference to the dating app Tinder, which accounts for the rating's suggestive-reference note.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults share a brief celebratory drink of vodka at work. No drugs, smoking or drunkenness are shown.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongOpens with the crash that kills the girl's parents. The doll's blank stare, eerie singing, sudden lunges and an on-all-fours chase through the woods build steady menace, with jump scares and a violent final showdown inside the house.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Death of a child
- Animal death
- Bullying
Worth talking about
The aunt hands much of her parenting to a machine. Talk about how much comfort a screen or device should give, and what grieving together as a family looks like.
