One Cut of the Dead: parents' guide

14+our pick

Best for ages 14 and up. Not formally rated.

A clever, big-hearted Japanese comedy in subtitles that suits young teens who can handle cheap-looking movie gore. The first 37 minutes play as a shaky, single-take zombie film with axe blows, a beheading and severed limbs; the rest reveals the chaotic live shoot behind it and turns into a warm story about a father and daughter. Bodily-function gags include a drunk actor vomiting and another actor with diarrhea. It was never rated in the US, and the UK classifier flagged only its bloody violence. We found no detailed US parents' guide, so the gore drives our suggestion of 14.

What's in it

Violence

Strong

The opening film-within-a-film has bloody axe attacks, beheadings and limbs being cut off, with people later shown with bloody stumps. The effects are deliberately low budget. Later, a wife lashes out at the cast and her husband puts her in a chokehold.

Language

Moderate

An Australian festival listing warns of moderate language, which points to some s-word-level swearing in the subtitles, mostly in heated on-set arguments. The UK classifier did not list language, and no source we found gives a count.

Sex and nudity

Mild

A Japan Foundation festival advisory lists mild nudity and a mild verbal reference to sex, though no source describes either in detail. Nothing sexual happens on screen.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

An alcoholic actor secretly drinks during the live shoot, gets drunk, passes out and later vomits mid-scene, and his relapse is played for laughs. A festival advisory also notes smoking. No drug use is reported.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

The first section is a jittery zombie horror sequence with screaming, chases and a blood-painted symbol meant to raise the dead. Once the behind-the-scenes story starts, it becomes a comedy with no real scares.

Worth talking about

Everything that looks like a mistake in the opening turns out to be people improvising to save the show. When has something gone wrong for you, and how did you and others keep it going?
