Anna and the Apocalypse: parents' guide
Best for ages 15 and up. Rated R for zombie violence and gore, language, and some sexual material.
A bouncy Christmas zombie musical from Scotland that works for older teens who don't mind gore or swearing. On the last day before the holidays, Anna and her schoolmates sing their way through a zombie outbreak, fighting the undead with bowling balls, a giant candy cane and whatever else is handy. The kills are comic but bloody, with a head exploding and entrails spilling, and f-words come often. One song is full of sexual innuendo. Several friends die, and Anna must say goodbye to her bitten father, which lands harder than the jokes. That mix of gore, language and grief is why we suggest 15.
What's in it
Violence
StrongComic but gory: zombies are beheaded (one with a seesaw) and smashed with bowling balls and toilet seats, a head explodes with blood and brain matter, a bite shows torn flesh, and blood sprays when zombies are killed.
Language
StrongFrequent f-words and s-words, plus asshole, prick, bitch and wank. Wordplay hints at the c-word and motherf---er without either being said aloud.
Sex and nudity
ModerateTeens kiss and talk about sex, and Anna's past one-night stand comes up. One song is packed with innuendo, with shirtless boys using candy canes suggestively. A girl mentions her girlfriend. No sex scenes or nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildA teenage girl finds a bottle of vodka in a teacher's office and pockets it. Beyond that, alcohol plays no real part in the story, and there is no drug use or smoking.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateMild jump scares and zombie attacks at school. Friends die, a grandmother has a fatal heart attack, and Anna's goodbye to her infected father is genuinely sad.
Sensitive topics

Worth talking about
Anna is desperate to leave her small town at the start, then fights to get back to the people in it. How does a crisis change what we value?
