It (2017): parents' guide
Best for ages 16 and up. Rated R for violence/horror, bloody images, and for language.
A scary, gory coming-of-age horror film best for older teens who enjoy being frightened. A group of bullied kids faces a shape-shifting clown that preys on children, and the film opens with a small boy's arm being bitten off. Expect bloody attacks, frequent f-words (about 40, mostly from 13-year-olds), brutal bullying including a knife carved into a boy's belly, and strong hints that a girl is sexually abused by her father. The kids are likable and their friendship is real, but the horror and abuse themes set the age at 16.
What's in it
Violence
StrongA small boy's arm is bitten off before he is dragged into a drain. A bully carves into a boy's belly and later kills his own father, a sheep is shot with a bolt gun, and a girl's father attacks her, strongly implying sexual abuse.
Language
StrongPlugged In counted about 40 f-words and nearly 25 s-words, nearly all from the child characters, plus an anti-gay slur, jokes mocking a Jewish boy, and misuse of God's and Jesus' names.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA father's creepy touching and an attack strongly imply incestuous abuse. Classmates spread rumors that a 13-year-old girl sleeps around, the boys make crude sex jokes, she sunbathes in her underwear while the boys watch, and two kids kiss.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateA girl steals cigarettes and smokes one in a bathroom, a bully smokes, and empty beer bottles surround an abusive father's chair.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongSustained terror rather than cheap jolts: Pennywise stalks children in many forms, including a headless boy and a rotting leper, there are bloody visions, and the children are in danger throughout.

Worth talking about
The kids win by sticking together, while the adults in Derry fail them. Talk about who a teen can turn to if someone at home is unsafe.
