Atypical: parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.
A warm, funny family dramedy that fits teens who can handle frank sexual talk. Sam, an autistic young man, hunts for a girlfriend and more independence while his sister, parents and best friend work through their own upheavals, including a parent's affair and a cancer diagnosis. Sexual references are constant, with implied sex, a strip-club visit and a scene showing a character's face during a hand job, and one character smokes marijuana. Language includes s-words and crude terms for anatomy, and Sam is called ableist slurs. Age 14 reflects the sexual content, teen drinking and pot use rather than anything violent.
What's in it
Violence
MildA few punches with no injury detail: a father punches his wife's lover, a teen is suspended for hitting a classmate, and a man punches a hole in a wall. Police force Sam to the ground during an arrest, and classmates taunt him.
Language
ModerateRegular cursing, including s-words, ass, bitch and crude words for genitals, with one crude term for female anatomy repeated through a scene. Ableist slurs such as retarded are aimed at disabled characters. The reviews we read noted no f-words.
Sex and nudity
ModerateSex comes up constantly: virginity, condoms, masturbation, oral sex. Couples kiss, strip to underwear and are implied naked under sheets or in a shower. One scene shows a character's face during a hand job, and a stripper flashes her breasts at Sam, seen from behind.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongSam's mother smokes marijuana with the man she is having an affair with, his best friend smokes pot and keeps a jar of it, and teens drink stolen vodka until drunk. Adults drink, and teens and adults smoke cigarettes.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing scary in the horror sense. Sam has panic attacks, one of which leaves him unconscious, a recurring character is treated for testicular cancer, and the family is shaken by a parent's affair. A death from a heart attack is mentioned.
Sensitive topics
- Bullying
Worth talking about
Ask what the show gets right or wrong about autism, and how Sam's family balances protecting him with letting him make his own choices and mistakes.
