Derry Girls: parents' guide

15+our pick

Best for ages 15 and up. Rated TV-MA.

A hilarious, warm-hearted teen comedy for mid-to-older teens who can handle a lot of swearing. Four girls and a lone English boy at a Catholic girls' school in 1990s Northern Ireland lurch from one scrape to the next against the backdrop of the Troubles, with soldiers, checkpoints and bomb scares played mostly for laughs. There are no sex scenes, but sex jokes are constant, f-words fly, teens drink, and a batch of cannabis scones ends up served at a wake. A parent's sudden death in the final season brings real grief. We suggest 15, mainly for language.

What's in it

Violence

Mild

The Troubles are a constant backdrop: armed soldiers at checkpoints, news of a deadly bombing, and the army blowing up the girls' suspicious suitcase. A peace retreat ends in a brawl, and a robbery is retold as a comic story. No injuries shown.

Language

Strong

Very frequent f-words, and one character keeps saying 'motherf---er' after watching a bootleg of Pulp Fiction. Also 'shite,' 'hell' and Irish slang like 'fanny.' A boy is often mocked as 'the gay lad,' and insults fly constantly.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

No sex scenes or nudity. Sex jokes are frequent and sometimes graphic, a teen boy plans to lose his virginity, condoms come up, and a main character comes out as gay in a sweet storyline.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Teens drink, smuggle vodka to a concert and wake up hungover, and one girl always seems to have alcohol on her. Characters smoke. Cannabis scones get served to mourners at a wake, played for laughs.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Bomb scares and checkpoints are mostly comic, and an elderly nun and an aunt die in scenes played for dark humor. The final season brings the sudden off-screen death of a main character's father and genuine grief.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The friends joke their way through the Troubles. How can humor help people cope with fear and conflict, and when might it get in the way of taking things seriously?
