On My Block: parents' guide
Best for ages 14 and up. Rated TV-14.
A funny, big-hearted dramedy about four friends starting high school in a Los Angeles neighborhood shaped by gangs, best for young teens with a parent. The comedy sits beside real danger: gunfire is routine, gang members beat and threaten kids, and a teen is fatally shot at a party, leaving friends with lasting trauma. Teens smoke pot and drink, and drug use grows in later seasons. Sex is talked about constantly but mostly kept off screen. Later seasons add a parent's suicide, a grandmother's cancer, a pregnancy and another fatal shooting. Content matures as the four seasons go on.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateGunfire is a regular backdrop, gang initiations involve beatings, and a man chokes a teen. A shooting at a quinceañera kills one teen and wounds another, and in season 4 Cesar's older brother is gunned down and dies in Cesar's arms.
Language
ModerateBitch is used constantly, as an insult and affectionately, along with shit, asshole, dick, hell, damn, goddammit, pissed and mofo, plus crude sexual remarks. Only a couple of f-words turn up across the whole series.
Sex and nudity
ModerateLots of sex talk and crude jokes, passionate kissing, a secret teen affair, a boy masturbating with a sock until his grandmother interrupts, loud off-screen sex, and occasional partial nudity in later seasons. Little is shown beyond making out.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongTeens smoke pot from joints, bongs and pipes and drink at parties, and middle schoolers drink beer. A grandmother smokes with her grandson, and in season 4 a character with cancer smokes weed regularly.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateFriends are left traumatized by a shooting, and the show explores PTSD with care. Later seasons bring a mother's off-screen suicide, a grandmother's death from cancer and another gun death, and the constant threat of gangs keeps tension high.
