To All the Boys I've Loved Before: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A sweet, low-key teen romantic comedy that most families with young teens can share, about a shy high school junior whose secret love letters get mailed to every boy she ever had a crush on. To dodge one of them she fakes a relationship with another, and it turns real. Expect kissing, frank talk about virginity and safe sex, a hot tub kiss that gets passed around school as a rumored sex tape, a few s-words, and some name-calling. The sisters are also still missing their late mother. Netflix rates it TV-14; it suits most kids from about 13.
What's in it
Violence
MildComic only: Lara Jean slips off a roof while escaping a conversation and lands unhurt, she threatens to beat up her little sister, and someone faints from embarrassment. No fights or injuries.
Language
ModerateOne counted review found four s-words and about six misuses of God's name, plus "hell," "bitch," "dick," "ass," "pissed," "slut" and "screw you," and a joke about a gynecologist's job.
Sex and nudity
MildSeveral kisses, some passionate, and a fake-dating contract that bans kissing. Teens talk about losing their virginity on a ski trip, a dad gives his daughter condoms, and a filmed hot tub kiss is rumored to be a sex tape.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildA dad drinks wine, an older sister mentions drinking legally abroad, and teens at a party appear to drink; the heroine thinks she has a beer but it's kombucha. One joke uses "doing crack" as slang for fun.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNo scary scenes. The sisters still grieve their mother, who died years earlier, and a humiliating video shared around school causes real distress, but the tone stays light and hopeful.
Sensitive topics
- Death of a parent
- Bullying
Worth talking about
When the hot tub video spreads, Lara Jean gets far more of the blame than the boy. Why does that double standard happen, and what should you do if a video like that is sent to you?
