Spy x Family: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated TV-14.
A warm, funny spy comedy with real action, good for tweens and up. A secret agent fakes a family for a mission, not knowing his new wife is an assassin and his adopted daughter can read minds. Violence is frequent but stylized: shootouts, knife fights and enemies killed, with some blood but no gore. Expect occasional s-words, a mom who gets drunk in a couple of episodes, adults smoking, and light innuendo. Classmates taunt the girl at school, her lab-subject past is briefly sad, and season 3 flashes back to the spy's wartime childhood, when his mother and friends died. Most 12-year-olds can enjoy it with a parent.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateGunfights, knife kills, grenade blasts and fistfights. An assassin cuts down bodyguards and, on a season 2 cruise ship, a whole squad of attackers, with spurts of blood. Secret police torture a suspect, leaving cigarette burns. Bloody at times, never gory.
Language
ModerateOne reviewer counted a few s-words per episode, 'damn' eight times in one episode, plus 'hell,' 'bastard' and 'ass,' along with insults aimed at the child.
Sex and nudity
MildCleavage, a painting of a nude woman, jokes about short skirts and a prostitution reference. The fake marriage brings blushing and mild romantic tension, with nothing sexual.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateThe mother is drunk for most of one episode and again in season 3, an orphanage worker is visibly drunk, and adults drink wine and smoke.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateMostly lighthearted, with tense stretches: the girl's flashbacks to lab experiments, a bomb plot aboard a cruise ship, a child taken hostage, and a season 3 flashback of bombings, the spy's mother's death and his friends killed in war.

Worth talking about
Every member of the family hides a secret identity, yet they become a real family anyway. Talk about what makes a family, and when keeping secrets from people we love is or isn't okay.
