A Man on the Inside: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A gentle, big-hearted comedy for young teens and up that also plays well with grandparents in the room. A retired, widowed professor goes undercover at a retirement community for a private investigator, and in the second season he takes on a case at a college. It is light on violence and sex, with an artist's model seen from behind and some s-words. Grief over his late wife, dementia, cancer and a resident's death give it emotional weight, and older adults drink, get tipsy and smoke marijuana, all played for laughs. Age 13 reflects the language, drug use and mature themes.
What's in it
Violence
MildAlmost none. One man punches another in the nose, and a staged fall accidentally hurts a man's hip. The mysteries involve theft, blackmail and a burned portrait rather than violent crime.
Language
ModerateSome s-words and "dips--t," plus "ass," "jacka--," "damn," "goddamn," "hell," "balls" and "t--ty." "Oh my God" and "Jesus" are common exclamations. No f-words were reported.
Sex and nudity
MildFlirting, kissing and suggestive talk among older adults, and the hero grows close to a professor in season 2. A nude art model is seen from behind and some paintings show bare breasts. Cheating spouses are investigated, never shown.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
StrongRetirees smoke marijuana in one scene played for laughs, several get drunk together, and the hero falls into water while drunk in season 2. Others smoke cigarettes and cigars, joke about shrooms and gummies, and chew nicotine gum.
Scary or intense scenes
MildNothing scary, but the hero is grieving his wife, and dementia, cancer and a beloved resident's sudden death off screen are handled with feeling. Some kids may find these themes sad.
Worth talking about
Charles discovers how lonely and overlooked many older people feel. What are some ways families and friends can stay connected to grandparents and older neighbors?
