Movies for 14-Year-Olds

Fourteen is when movie night stops needing to be a compromise. A 14-year-old wants what high schoolers watch: the clique satire everyone quotes, the horror movie the group chat is talking about, the superhero finale, the tearjerker, and maybe a first R-rated film about kids their own age. All but one of these are from the last 15 years.

Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is plain: every movie here has a guide age of 13 to 14. At this age the useful distinction is what's shown versus what's talked about. Mean Girls and Pitch Perfect run on sex jokes with little shown, while The Fault in Our Stars and Lion each have one discreet or implied sex scene. The Remarkable Life of Ibelin is mild on screen but heavy with grief, and Thunderbolts* is a superhero movie about depression. M3GAN and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark are simply about fear.

Eighth Grade is the only R here, for language and sexual material, and it's the one most worth watching side by side. The lightest are To All the Boys I've Loved Before and Tick, Tick... Boom!. For a step younger, see The Best Movies for 13-Year-Olds or Movies for 12-Year-Olds; for a step older, Movies for 15-Year-Olds and Movies for 16-Year-Olds. Films about growing up have a list of their own: Coming-of-Age Movies for Teens and Parents.
