Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for violent content, bloody images, strong language, some crude sexual material, and smoking.
A twisty, often funny whodunit for teens who like puzzles, set in a small-town Catholic parish. Detective Benoit Blanc helps a young priest accused of killing his domineering superior during a church service. Expect stabbings with some blood, decayed bodies, a brief flashback of a woman beating a young girl, and a character's suicide, which is not shown in detail. Language includes an f-word or two and many s-words, and a running joke centers on a priest's masturbation confession. One guide also reports some male rear nudity. Smoking and heavy drinking appear too. It suits most kids about 13 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateA priest is stabbed in the back during Mass, shown in several replays; others die by poison or a stab to the neck, with some blood. In a brief flashback, a woman holds a young girl down and repeatedly hits her face.
Language
ModeratePlugged In counted two f-words and more than 20 s-words, many from priests, plus 'ass,' 'bitch,' 'dick' and 'piss,' with 'Jesus' and 'Christ' as exclamations. Insults include 'whore' and 'libtard.' Movieguide also counted two f-words; Common Sense lists one.
Sex and nudity
ModerateA priest's confession goes into comic detail about masturbation, a vandalized tomb is covered in crude penis graffiti, and a woman is branded a whore for an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. No sex scenes. Movieguide lists some male rear nudity; other guides don't mention any.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateSeveral characters smoke, including a lawyer who takes it up again. People drink beer and whiskey at a bar, one is clearly drunk, a priest swigs from a flask during Mass, and drinking problems are hinted at.
Scary or intense scenes

Worth talking about
The film contrasts faith used to shame and control people with faith that offers grace. Ask your teen which characters show real compassion, and how they can tell.
