Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves: parents' guide

12+our pick

Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for fantasy action/violence and some language.

A funny, good-natured fantasy caper that gamers and non-gamers can enjoy together from the tween years up. A bard-turned-thief and his crew of misfits try to rescue his daughter and pull off a heist against a crooked lord and a sinister wizard. Fights with swords, spells and monsters are frequent and kill many people, but blood is scarce. Shambling undead soldiers, a man dissolved by a giant gelatin monster, and flashbacks about the murder of the hero's wife may unsettle younger kids. Language includes a handful of s-words. Age 12 reflects the fantasy violence and a few dark moments.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent sword fights, crossbow shots and destructive magic kill many people, mostly without blood. A guard is decapitated inside his helmet, a throat is slit off-screen, a dragon swallows a man, and a cube-shaped monster dissolves another down to his bones.

Language

Moderate

About five s-words, six damns, four bastards, two bitches and two pricks, plus bollocks, bloody, hell and one misuse of God's name.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Flashbacks show a married couple kissing and cuddling in bed, a warrior wears cleavage-baring outfits, an orc makes crude advances on her before she beats him, and two young team members flirt. No nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Adults drink in taverns, and one brief scene shows the hero drunk and being helped home. A character is teased about drinking too much. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Undead soldiers with rotting faces, corpses raised to answer questions, one with an eye dangling from its socket, a hungry dragon and a monstrous cat-like beast. Flashbacks reveal that the hero's wife was murdered by a wizard's followers, and a beloved team member is mortally wounded.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Talk about Edgin admitting he let his daughter down, and how the crew becomes a family by trusting one another's strengths.
