Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for strong language, some violence, sexual material and drug content.

A twisty, very funny murder mystery that teens and parents can puzzle out together. Detective Benoit Blanc joins a tech billionaire's old friends on a private Greek island for a murder-mystery weekend that turns real. Violence is limited but includes a fatal poisoning and a shooting with some blood. Expect two f-words, more than two dozen s-words, nearly constant drinking, a goofy background character who seems to smoke marijuana, and sexual material such as a woman in a bikini making out with a man on a bed. A past death staged to look like suicide is part of the plot. Age 13 fits the language and adult behavior.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A guest dies of poisoning, a character is shot with some blood, a spear gun is fired and misses, and there are hard slaps, explosions and a fire. A death in the backstory was made to look like suicide.

Language

Moderate

Two f-words and more than two dozen s-words, plus asshole, bitch, bastard, goddamn, boner and titties, nearly 30 misuses of God's name, and a middle-finger gesture.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

A bikini-clad woman climbs onto a man on a bed and makes out with him as others look on, hinting at an affair. A men's rights streamer jokes about breasts and pitches sex pills to teens. Condoms, a sex toy and a nude statue's backside are glimpsed.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Cocktails, wine, beer and spiked kombucha flow throughout, and one guest gets noticeably drunk. Blanc smokes cigars, guests smoke and vape, and a goofy background character seems to be smoking marijuana.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Suspense more than scares: a guest collapses and dies in front of everyone, the lights go out, a gunshot rings out in the dark, and the group panics about a killer among them. No gore or horror imagery.

Sensitive topics

  • Suicide

Worth talking about

Talk about why so many successful people keep going along with a powerful friend who treats them badly, and what it costs them.
