Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated TV-14.
Classic, hopeful Star Trek adventure with a new planet or puzzle most weeks, good for tweens who can handle some scares. Captain Pike's crew, including a young Spock and Uhura, explores space years before Kirk takes over. Most episodes are light, with phaser fights, comedy and mild language, but the Gorn episodes play like horror films, with creatures hatching from people, half-eaten bodies and gory wounds. Romance includes implied sex and couples in bed, with only a bare back shown. Season 1 is rated TV-PG and season 2 TV-14, so it lands near 12.
What's in it
Violence
ModeratePhaser fights, brawls, ship battles and explosions are frequent but mostly bloodless. Gorn episodes are the exception: acid burns, claw wounds, eggs blistering a woman's back, a half-digested corpse and a creature's neck bursting. A child's charred body appears once.
Language
MildMostly 'hell' and 'damn,' with occasional 'crap' and 'bloody' and a rare clipped s-word. A brief video in the premiere shows the f-word on a protest sign.
Sex and nudity
ModerateKissing, making out and couples seen in bed. Sex is implied off screen several times, such as a woman's bare back after a night with the captain and Spock's romantic evening being interrupted. No nudity beyond that.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildAdults drink brandy, liquor and Klingon bloodwine; one comic scene has a Klingon vomiting and Spock nursing a hangover the next day. No drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
StrongA few episodes are full-on horror, with Gorn hatchlings bursting from victims and stalking the crew in the dark; one infected main character throws himself to his death to stop them hatching. One episode centers on a child kept in suffering to power a city.
Sensitive topics
- Child abuse
- Suicide
Worth talking about
In one episode a whole society's comfort depends on one child's suffering. Ask whether a community can ever justify that bargain, and what the crew should have done.
