Love and Monsters: parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated PG-13 for action/violence, language and some suggestive material.

A funny, warm-hearted monster adventure for young teens, about an anxious young man who leaves his underground bunker years after giant mutant creatures overran Earth, hoping to reunite with his high school girlfriend. Monsters snatch and eat a few people without blood, and the hero is regularly thrown around, but the tone stays light. Expect about 15 s-words, a couple heard having sex behind a curtain, and some drunkenness. A flashback shows the hero's parents killed during the evacuation. A loyal dog sidekick adds plenty of heart. We suggest 13.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Giant toads, centipedes, crabs and other creatures attack, and three people are eaten without blood. A creature is blown into goopy chunks with a grenade, the hero is bitten by leeches, and humans fight each other once.

Language

Moderate

Plugged In counted about 15 s-words (Movieguide's tally of milder swear words, mostly s-words, was about 30), one 'goddamn,' several uses each of 'ass,' 'hell,' 'bitch' and 'bastard,' a couple of crude references to male genitals, and frequent 'oh my God.' No f-words.

Sex and nudity

Moderate

The hero overhears a couple making love behind a curtain in the bunker and sees another pair's bare legs on a bed. A flashback make-out session nearly goes further, and there are a few passionate kisses. No nudity.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

A colony member brews homemade beer; the hero turns it down, but others drink and some pass out drunk. The hero staggers after a leech's venomous bite until a plant revives him.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Creatures strike suddenly and some look truly scary, especially one that hunts from beneath the sand. The dog is in danger several times but comes through. The flashback of the parents' deaths is sad.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

Joel believes he is a coward because he froze in one terrible moment. How does the film suggest courage is built through practice and choices rather than being something you are born with?
