One Piece (2023): parents' guide

13+our pick

Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.

A colorful, big-hearted pirate adventure best suited to young teens watching with a parent. Luffy and his crew are goofy and loyal, but nearly every episode has fights, some bloody, with stabbings, executions and big battles. Backstories get dark: a girl watches the villain kill her adoptive mother, young Luffy stabs his own cheek to prove he is tough, a starving castaway eats his own leg, and in season 2 a dying mentor blows himself up. Expect s-words, plenty of drinking by older teens, including a drunken night and a drinking game, and cigar smoking. Age 13 because the bloodshed, drinking and grim flashbacks match the TV-14.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent sword, gun and superpower fights with splashes and pools of blood and many deaths, though the camera often cuts away. A man is sliced in half, a clown villain splits into floating body parts, and season 2 opens with a massacre of marines.

Language

Moderate

S-words come up regularly: Plugged In counted one in the first episode and seven in the season 2 premiere. Also ass, hell, bastard, bitch, dick and piss, some misuse of God's name and a middle-finger gesture. Neither review noted an f-word.

Sex and nudity

Mild

Mostly mild: brief kisses, shirtless men and low-cut outfits. One comic scene shows a man's bare backside while he covers his front with a stuffed toy, and two side characters admit they like each other.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Moderate

Pirates drink rum, whisky and beer, including crew members in their late teens. One character gets sloppy drunk, slurring and vomiting, the crew plays a drinking game with shots of hard liquor, and a marine captain smokes cigars.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

A creepy circus clown, sea monsters, near-drownings and executions. Flashbacks hit hardest: a girl sees her adoptive mother shot, a castaway eats his own leg, and in season 2 a dying doctor surrounded by soldiers takes his own life in an explosion.

Worth talking about

Nami spends years secretly working for the man who killed her mother to protect her village. When is it right to ask friends for help instead of carrying a burden alone?
