Mob Psycho 100: parents' guide
Best for ages 13 and up. Rated TV-14.
A funny, big-hearted superpower anime for teens that swings between goofy comedy and intense psychic battles. Mob, a shy middle schooler with enormous powers, works for a con-artist 'psychic' while trying to keep his emotions bottled up. Fights get bloody, with beatings, kidnappings and whole neighborhoods wrecked. Season 2 includes a villain who died by suicide, a long stretch where Mob is trapped in a world of relentless bullying, and references to sexual violence. Expect crude fan-service gags, some smoking and mostly mild swearing with a few s-words. Best for 13 and up, and a strong pick for kids who feel different.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateFrequent psychic battles with energy blasts and collapsing buildings. Some fights draw blood: a boy is choked, a man has his teeth knocked out, characters are beaten bloody, and season 3 shows a pool of blood after a character is struck by a vehicle.
Language
ModerateMostly 'hell,' 'damn,' 'crap,' 'ass' and 'bastard,' with occasional 's--t' and 'dipshit.' An older Netflix translation of season 1 drew a UK warning for infrequent strong language, usually a sign of an f-word, in three episodes.
Sex and nudity
ModerateNo sex, but crude fan service: brief upskirt shots, a ghost peeping at schoolgirls, a flasher, groping and porn-site jokes, and comic bare buttocks. Season 2 has a man spying on a woman through out-of-body trips, and the UK board notes sexual violence references.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateA few adult characters smoke cigarettes. A man acts drunk and vomits in an alley, though his drink turns out to be alcohol-free. No drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateCreepy spirits, a cult that brainwashes people and Mob's frightening power surges. In season 2 Mob finds what look like his family's charred bodies (they are fakes) and endures a long psychological ordeal of bullying, including bullies tormenting a stray cat.
Sensitive topics
- Bullying
- Suicide
Worth talking about
Mob is stronger than almost everyone around him but keeps choosing kindness over force. Is being powerful the same as being strong, and what makes someone a good person?
