Guardians of the Galaxy: parents' guide
Best for ages 12 and up. Rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language.
A wisecracking space adventure with an oldies soundtrack for tweens and teens, though it opens on a sad note: a young boy watches his mother die of illness just before aliens abduct him. After that come fast, colorful battles with many deaths and occasional blood, a few s-words, a cut-off f-word and one middle-finger gesture. The hero's womanizing is played for laughs, including a forgotten fling still aboard his ship, the villain is briefly seen naked from behind, and two crew members get drunk. With sex kept to jokes and implication, 12 is about right; the opening may hit hard for kids who have lost a parent.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateConstant space battles, shootouts, stabbings and chokings with many deaths, mostly with little blood. The villain kills a bound captive with a hammer just off screen, and blood runs across the floor; one arrow kills about 20 men, and a vision shows people burning away.
Language
ModerateA few s-words, among them bullshit and batshit, plus an unfinished "what the f." Ass, asshole, damn and hell recur; bitch, bastard, prick, dick and whore appear once or twice, and God's name is misused about six times. One prominent middle-finger gesture.
Sex and nudity
ModeratePeter, a womanizer, forgets a recent fling is still aboard his ship, and there's a crude joke about what a black light would reveal there. He's hosed down in underwear, the villain is briefly seen naked from behind, and Rocket suggests trading sexual favors.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
ModerateDrax downs large amounts of an alien drink while gambling with Rocket, and Peter tells Rocket he's drunk as a brawl breaks out. A post-credits scene shows characters with liquor and a martini.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateThe opening hospital scene, with young Peter too upset to take his dying mother's hand, is genuinely sad. Later come menacing villains, prison violence, a hero sacrificing himself, and moments where main characters appear to die.

Worth talking about
Every member of the crew is carrying a loss, and Peter regrets not taking his mother's hand. How do the characters help each other deal with grief?
