Movies for 12-Year-Olds
Twelve is the in-between year. Most 12-year-olds have decided anything aimed at little kids is beneath them, but they aren't yet watching what older teens watch, and plenty of parents aren't ready for that either. These are movies a 12-year-old will feel are meant for them: a Spider-Man still in high school, Hogwarts turning dark, Star Wars as a war movie, a concert film for Swifties, and classics parents loved at the same age.
Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is simple: every movie here has a guide age of 11 to 12. The most useful thing to know at this age is that an old PG is not a modern PG. Raiders of the Lost Ark and Rocky came out before PG-13 existed and Back to the Future just after, and all three carry more than their rating suggests, from melting faces to an attempted sexual assault. Rogue One and The Fellowship of the Ring, both PG-13, have no real swearing.
For an easy start, try Spider-Man: Homecoming, Enola Holmes or Bumblebee. Read the notes first on Groundhog Day, The Boy and the Heron and Isle of Dogs, which touch on suicide or self-harm, as Wonder Woman and Pirates of the Caribbean briefly do. For gentler picks, go back to Movies for 10-Year-Olds; for the next step, see The Best Movies for 13-Year-Olds, Movies for 14-Year-Olds or PG-13 movies with no sex scenes.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Movie · 2017The easiest yes for a 12-year-old: Peter Parker is 15, juggling homework, a crush and a winged arms dealer, and the film is genuinely funny. Action is mostly bloodless, though Peter is beaten and buried under rubble. Expect a few s-words, a cut-off f-word, a middle finger, a porn joke, a classmate's taunts and red cups at a house party.
Back to the Future
Movie · 1985A 1985 favorite 12-year-olds still love: Marty lands in 1955 and must get his teenage parents together. It carries more than its PG: his future mom has a crush on him, the drunk bully Biff tries to sexually assault her in a parked car before she's rescued, and terrorists shoot Doc. About six s-words, racial epithets, teen drinking and smoking.
Enola Holmes
Movie · 2020At 12, a heroine who outthinks everyone, Sherlock included, is hard to resist. Enola goes after her vanished mother and ends up shielding a runaway young lord. The fights earn the PG-13: a hired killer punches, chokes and nearly drowns her, and a man dies after hitting his head. Language is mild; the romance barely starts.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Movie · 1981The adventure that later adventures copy, and 12 is a fine age to meet Indiana Jones. Its 1981 PG plays more like today's PG-13: a mechanic dies under a spinning propeller with a spray of blood, snakes, spiders and corpses deliver jolts, and villains' faces melt in the finale. One s-word, a poisoned monkey, and Marion winning a drinking contest.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Movie · 2005The Harry Potter film where the series stops being for little kids, which is its appeal at 12. Dragons, an underwater rescue and the Yule Ball fill the middle. The graveyard finale is the hard part: a blood ritual, Voldemort's return and a teenage student killed on screen, his father later sobbing over the body. Mild British swearing.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
Movie · 2023For a 12-year-old Swiftie, close to three hours of songs they already know by heart. There's no story and nothing scary. Everything to flag is in the lyrics and staging: four f-words and about a dozen s-words by one count, lines about getting drunk and someone doing lines, a crowd-chanted 'bitch,' and suggestive choreography, most of all a chair routine.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
Movie · 2016Star Wars as a war movie, for a 12-year-old who has outgrown the franchise's cuter corners. No profanity, and the leads only embrace. What earns the age is loss: a girl watches her mother shot, rebels kill coldly, Darth Vader cuts through trapped soldiers in a dark corridor, and nearly every hero dies by the end.
Groundhog Day
Movie · 1993A comedy a 12-year-old can fully get: a sour weatherman relives one February day until he becomes a better person. Language is very mild. The thing to know: in despair, Phil tries to kill himself again and again in a comic montage, waking unharmed each time. He also drives drunk, and an old man he tries to save dies.
The Boy and the Heron
Movie · 2023Miyazaki's dreamlike fantasy suits a 12-year-old better than a young Ghibli fan: it's about grief, and it doesn't explain itself. Mahito's mother dies in a wartime hospital fire, and after a schoolyard fight he strikes his own head with a rock, leaving a bloody wound. Knife-wielding parakeets, a dying pelican and a gutted fish add gore. Swearing is mild; adults smoke.
Rocky
Movie · 1976The underdog story every sports movie borrows from, for a 12-year-old who competes at anything. The title fight is bloody, with Rocky's swollen eyelid cut open, and a drunk Paulie rages at his sister and wrecks the house with a bat. No f-words, but adult words like 'whore.' Romance stays at kissing, though Rocky pushes on their first date.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Movie · 2014A raccoon, a walking tree and a mixtape of 1960s and '70s hits: Marvel's funniest origin story, and an easy sell at 12. It opens hard, at Peter's mother's deathbed. Then come colorful battles with occasional blood, a few s-words, a cut-off f-word, a middle finger, jokes about Peter's flings, and a brief rear view of the naked villain.
Thirteen Lives
Movie · 2022A true story that grips this age: a boys' soccer team and their coach trapped deep in a flooding Thai cave, and the divers who swim them out. Knowing they survive helps. The dives are claustrophobic, a volunteer diver dies underwater on screen, and the boys are sedated with ketamine for the trip out. A couple of f-words; nothing sexual.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Movie · 2001Twelve is a good age to start the trilogy: old enough for three hours, young enough to be swept away. There's no swearing at all. Orcs are beheaded with little blood, Frodo is stabbed, a member of the Fellowship falls to arrows, and the shrieking Black Riders and the fire demon in the mines are the scariest stretches.
Bumblebee
Movie · 2018The Transformers film with a real story: a girl still grieving her dad fixes up a yellow Beetle that turns out to be alive. Set in 1987, it's sweet and funny. Robot fights are nearly bloodless, though Bumblebee is chained and tortured and two people are liquefied. Two s-words, no drinking, and an unpunished revenge prank on a girl who taunts her.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Movie · 1975Twelve is about when the coconuts, the killer rabbit and the limbless Black Knight start to land, and kids quote it for years. The blood is bright and obviously fake. The bigger surprise is how bawdy it is: young women at Castle Anthrax begging to be spanked, an oral-sex punchline, cartoon bare bottoms, one s-word and plenty of British insults.
Wonder Woman
Movie · 2017A superhero worth looking up to, set in World War I, where Diana's kindness keeps colliding with how ugly war is. Battles are bloodless but grim: poison gas kills a village, and a cornered spy swallows a cyanide pill. Language is mild. Steve is seen naked, covered by his hands, and the couple are implied to spend a night together.
Twilight
Movie · 2008The vampire romance plenty of 12-year-olds find on their own, so it's a good one to share. Mostly longing looks; the last act brings a bite, a stomped leg and a vampire torn apart. The couple make out on her bed before he stops, and men stalk Bella down a dark street. Worth discussing: Edward's controlling streak, presented as devotion.
Isle of Dogs
Movie · 2018Wes Anderson's stop-motion adventure gives a 12-year-old a hero their own age: a boy who flies to an island of exiled dogs to find his own. Expect an ear bitten off, a bloody metal shard in the boy's head, a surgery showing organs and stitches, dog skeletons, and talk of dogs taking their own lives. Swearing is rare.
Wicked: For Good
Movie · 2025For a 12-year-old who knows every word of the first Wicked, the second half is darker and more grown-up; watch part one first. No real swearing. A mob calls for Elphaba's death, a captured man is tied up and beaten, a character is killed off screen by a falling house, and a love song leads to an implied night together.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Movie · 2003Jack Sparrow's swaying, slippery charm carries this swashbuckler, and 12 is the sweet spot for it. Sword fights and cannon fire kill many with little blood, and the cursed crew turns to rotting skeletons by moonlight. Rum flows and drunkenness is a joke. Suicide comes up twice, once as the young hero's pistol-to-the-head bargaining threat.
