Wicked: For Good: parents' guide

11+our pick

Best for ages 11 and up. Rated PG for action/violence, some suggestive material and thematic material.

A darker, more grown-up second half of the musical, fine for most tweens who loved the first film. Elphaba is now hunted as a wicked witch while Glinda becomes the smiling face of the Wizard's propaganda. A mob calls for her death, a woman is held at gunpoint, a captured man is beaten, and a character is killed off screen when a house lands on her. The romance goes further than part one: kissing and caressing on a bed leads to an implied night together. Language is clean. Age 11 for the implied sex, the deaths and the heavier themes of grief and persecution.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Guards draw pistols on people, a captured man is tied up and beaten, flying monkeys give chase, a man with an axe breaks down a door, and a woman is killed off screen by a falling house. Slaps and scuffles are played for laughs.

Language

None

No real profanity. The worst is one "oh my Lord" and the made-up curse "shiz," plus insults like "traitor" and "witch."

Sex and nudity

Moderate

Several passionate kisses. During a love song, two adults in partly unbuttoned clothes kiss and caress on a bed before the camera cuts away; next morning he is shirtless and she is in undergarments, clearly implying sex. A past affair is revealed.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

The Wizard swigs from a small green bottle that he says dulls the pain and offers it to others, and a flashback shows him plying a married woman with the same green drink. No drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Angry mobs chant for a death, effigies burn, caged Animals cower, a man screams through a painful magical transformation, and a character appears to die while her friend sobs. Believing someone she loves is dead, Elphaba gives up and decides to surrender to her hunters.

Worth talking about

The Wizard and Madame Morrible turn a whole city against Elphaba with rumors and a shared enemy. How does propaganda like that work, and why do people go along with it?
