Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: parents' guide

11+our pick

Best for ages 11 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of fantasy violence and frightening images.

A darker turn for the Harry Potter series, best for families who have been reading or watching the story together. Harry is forced into a deadly tournament with a dragon chase, an underwater rescue and a menacing hedge maze, and the graveyard finale is genuinely frightening: a dark ritual, Voldemort's return, and a teenage student killed on screen whose father later sobs over the body. Language is mild British slang and romance is limited to Yule Ball crushes. We suggest 11 and up because the ending is much scarier and sadder than the first three films.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

A teen is killed by a bloodless curse, and an elderly caretaker is murdered. A teacher tortures a spider in class, a dragon hunts Harry, a servant cuts off his own hand (implied) and slices Harry's arm, and Harry is tortured by a curse.

Language

Mild

Mild British swearing: "bloody hell," "piss off," one "damn" from Harry, and "bastard" according to the BBFC, plus an "oh my God."

Sex and nudity

Mild

Fourteen-year-olds juggle crushes and Yule Ball dates, couples kiss in the shadows, and a girl ghost giggles while trying to peek at Harry in a bubble bath. Hagrid's hand drifts low while dancing and is moved back.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Students drink butterbeer, a teacher swigs often from a flask that turns out to hold a potion rather than alcohol, and a joke says a headmistress's horses drink only malt whiskey.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Death Eaters set a campground ablaze, merpeople menace students underwater, and a dark maze swallows competitors. The graveyard climax, with a shriveled, baby-like figure lowered into a cauldron, a blood ritual, Voldemort's rebirth and a sudden death, is the scariest scene yet.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a child

Worth talking about

Harry risks everything to bring Cedric's body home to his father. Why does honoring someone who has died matter so much, both to a family and to a friend?
