Star Wars: The Last Jedi: parents' guide
Best for ages 10 and up. Rated PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi action and violence.
A long, ambitious middle chapter that suits tweens already invested in the sequel trilogy. Expect large space battles where many good guys die, lightsaber fights, a villain cut in half without blood, and characters sacrificing themselves. A villain tortures heroes with the Force, and horse-like racing animals are shown wounded by whips while child stable hands are mistreated. A major character dies, though peacefully rather than violently. Language is mild ("bastard," "damn," "hell"), and romance is a quick kiss and a shirtless scene played for laughs. We suggest 10 and up.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateSpace battles destroy dozens of ships, with pilots dying in their cockpits. Lightsaber and blaster fights, a character cut in two without blood, some bloody faces, Force torture, and racing animals wounded by whip-wielding handlers.
Language
MildMild and infrequent; one review counted seven words in all, including "damn," "hell," "ass," "bastard" and "bloody." R2-D2 beeps something profane and gets scolded for it.
Sex and nudity
MildA quick kiss on the lips, some romantic tension, a shirtless man who flusters a female hero, revealing casino outfits and a mild sexual joke. No nudity.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
MildWealthy patrons drink champagne and cocktails at a casino, and someone mentions a child being sold for "drinking money." No drunkenness or drug use.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateA grotesque Supreme Leader, Force torture, people sucked out into space, crews trapped in burning ships and several heroic sacrifices. A main character dies, though quietly.
Worth talking about
Yoda tells Luke that failure is the greatest teacher. Talk about a mistake that taught you something you couldn't have learned any other way.
