Rogue One: A Star Wars Story: parents' guide

11+our pick

Best for ages 11 and up. Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of sci-fi violence and action.

A grittier war story set just before the original Star Wars, best for tweens who like intense action and can handle a sad ending. The body count is high and includes most of the main cast, though blood is minimal. Early on a young girl watches her mother shot and her father taken, and as an adult she loses her father again. Rebels kill enemies in cold blood, a creature probes a prisoner's mind, and Darth Vader cuts through a hallway of trapped soldiers. There's almost no profanity or romance. We suggest 11 and up for the losses and the war-movie tone.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Extended firefights, explosions and two superweapon blasts that wipe out a city and a base, with many deaths and little blood. Rebels shoot wounded or unarmed enemies at close range, and Vader slaughters trapped rebels with his lightsaber.

Language

None

No profanity reported beyond one unfinished "What the..." The harshest words are insults such as "traitor," "thief" and "criminal."

Sex and nudity

None

The two leads clearly care for each other and embrace near the end, with no kiss. A tiny hologram of a dancer moves suggestively in one background moment.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

Mild

Characters drink an unidentified beverage in a bar-like setting, and an Imperial officer holds a drink in a flashback. No smoking or drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

A child hides after seeing her mother killed, a tentacled creature invades a prisoner's mind, whole areas are vaporized, and Vader's attack in a dark corridor is terrifying. Nearly every hero dies before the end.

Sensitive topics

  • Death of a parent

Worth talking about

The team gives everything so others can have a chance. Talk about what makes a sacrifice meaningful even when the people who made it never see the outcome.
