Movies for 10-Year-Olds

Around ten, many kids start to bristle at anything that feels babyish. They want higher stakes, villains who mean it, heroes their own age or a bit older, and jokes that don't talk down to them, and they're often ready for a story that leaves them thinking. These picks are for that stage: fantasy and space sagas, sports stories, musicals, sharp comedies, an anime romance and a few true stories, nearly all of which a parent will enjoy just as much.

Every pick comes from our parents' guide, and the rule is plain: every movie here has a guide age of 9 to 10. At this age the useful distinction is scary versus grown-up. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Empire Strikes Back and KPop Demon Hunters earn their age with menace and battles. Apollo 13, A League of Their Own and The Truman Show have no monsters at all but more swearing than most family films, with s-words in each. Turning Red and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. are about puberty and are best watched together.

Two picks are darker than they look: Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio opens with a child killed in a bombing, and Frankenstein includes a little girl's drowning. For something gentler, go back to Movies for 8-Year-Olds; for the next step, see Movies for 12-Year-Olds. Families choosing one film for a wide age range can try Family Movie Night Picks.
