Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender: parents' guide
Best for ages 9 and up. Rated PG for sequences of violence/action.
An animated follow-up to the beloved series that suits school-age fans, though it's more intense than the show. A grown-up Aang learns of another airbender and a powerful staff, and the friends clash with a group of non-benders who turn to violence. Fights are constant but bloodless. The film revisits the genocide of Aang's people, with a field of bodies and people turning to ash, and major characters briefly die before being revived. Romance is limited to a couple of kisses, and there's no swearing. Best for 9 and up, especially kids who already know the series.
What's in it
Violence
ModerateNear-constant elemental martial-arts battles, plus daggers, arrows and blades; characters are thrown, struck and knocked out, with no blood. Flashbacks show the Air Nomad genocide, with men, women and children turning to ash, a field of dead bodies, and people crushed by rocks.
Language
NoneNo profanity. The worst is 'butt' and made-up exclamations like 'What the hogmonkey?'
Sex and nudity
MildAang and Katara share a couple of brief kisses, Toph flirts with a newcomer whose looks the others joke about, and a few men go shirtless.
Drinking, drugs and smoking
NoneNo drinking, smoking or drugs; Aang holds what looks like a glass of wine once.
Scary or intense scenes
ModerateIntense peril with burning cities, storms, avalanches and an exploding mountain. Main characters appear to be killed before being restored, Aang slips into a frightening corrupted state, and a villain transforms into a monstrous spirit creature.
Worth talking about
The Denied fight back because benders hold power they never can. Can a group have a real grievance and still be wrong in how it fights?
