KPop Demon Hunters: parents' guide

9+our pick

Best for ages 9 and up. Rated PG for action/violence, scary images, thematic elements, some suggestive material and brief language.

A catchy, high-energy musical action film that is a huge hit with grade-schoolers, about a K-pop girl group that secretly battles demons with their voices and weapons. The demons look scary and drain people's souls, the girls fight hordes of them with swords, and the lead singer hides her demon markings out of shame. One demon is haunted by guilt over the family he abandoned long ago, and a major character dies in an act of self-sacrifice. Romance is limited to flirting and a running gag about a boy's abs. Language is very mild. The scary demons and heavier themes are why we suggest 9.

What's in it

Violence

Moderate

Frequent sword and fist battles against demons who burst into glittery dust, sometimes sliced in half. Demons suck out human souls, passengers vanish from a train, the heroines are cut and bruised, and one character dies sacrificing himself. No blood.

Language

Mild

Very mild: dang, jeez, suck and 'kick their butts,' plus insults like idiots and stupid jerks. No stronger words were reported.

Sex and nudity

Mild

The girls swoon over a rival boy band, with popcorn shooting from their eyes at a demon's bare six-pack. One heroine and a demon flirt and grow close. A bathhouse scene shows a man in a towel, and stage outfits bare midriffs.

Drinking, drugs and smoking

None

No drinking, smoking or drug use.

Scary or intense scenes

Moderate

Demons with masklike faces, crawling shadow creatures, a tiger spirit and a giant fiery demon king who feeds on souls. Characters are tormented by whispering voices that prey on their shame and regrets.

Worth talking about

Rumi hides part of herself, believing her bandmates would reject her if they knew. What happens when we keep our struggles secret, and who can we trust with them?
