Family Movie Night Picks
The hard part of family movie night is finding something everyone enjoys — not just tolerates. These picks are genuinely great for kids and grown-ups together, no compromise required.
The test applied here is simple: would an adult choose this on their own? Plenty of children's films are perfectly fine and completely inert for anyone over ten. The ones below hold up because they were written with adults in the room, not merely tolerating them. Newer picks pass the same test: The Wild Robot and The Mitchells vs. the Machines are as much for the parents as for the kids.
Ages vary more than the ratings suggest. Coco and The Iron Giant both deal directly with death and land hard on younger children. Knives Out has language and a body. Bluey and Toy Story are the safest for the youngest viewers, along with My Neighbor Totoro. Notes below flag the ones worth previewing. Paddington 2
Movie · 2017Works from about six with few caveats: the tensest moments are a brief flashback death and Paddington trapped in a sinking train car at the climax. Genuinely one of the best-constructed comedies of the decade, whatever your age.
The Princess Bride
Movie · 1987The most reliable multi-generational pick there is: grandparents and eight-year-olds laugh at different lines in the same scene. Swordfights, a torture machine and giant rats are played lightly, but Inigo is out to avenge his murdered father, and Buttercup briefly holds a dagger to her chest.
The Wild Robot
Movie · 2024One of the newest films here, and it clears the would-an-adult-choose-it test without effort: a stranded robot ends up raising an orphaned gosling. Best from about seven. The accident that orphans the gosling, a few predator scenes and the other geese teasing him can upset younger kids, and the ending reliably gets the parents.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Movie · 2018The best action pick for a mixed-age room once the youngest is about nine. Visually overwhelming in a good way and easy to follow, but two deaths hit hard, one of them a relative who dies in Miles's arms, and a flashback shows the villain's wife and son killed in a car crash.
The Mitchells vs. the Machines
Movie · 2021A road trip with a dad and his film-obsessed teenage daughter that collides with a robot apocalypse. Kids get nonstop gags; parents get an uncomfortably accurate portrait of family screen-time fights. Good from about seven, though a sequence with an army of evil Furbies and one giant one rattles some little ones.
Toy Story
Movie · 1995Eighty minutes and one of the safest bets here from about five, with Sid's dim bedroom of mutant toys the main scare. Still the most efficient family film ever made.
Inside Out
Movie · 2015An eleven-year-old's emotions as characters, which gives families an easy way to talk about feelings afterward. Small children enjoy the colors and slapstick; the real payload lands from about eight. One sad moment in the back half tends to catch the adults off guard more than the kids.
Coco
Movie · 2017Extraordinary, and directly about death and remembering the dead. Wonderful for most families; worth previewing if you have a child who's recently lost someone.
Up
Movie · 2009The pick that grandparents and seven-year-olds enjoy equally: a widower ties balloons to his house and finds a boy scout stowed away on the porch. The opening montage about a whole marriage will undo the adults. Younger kids may be rattled by the villain's gun and snarling dogs, though everyone loves Dug, the friendly one.
KPop Demon Hunters
Movie · 2025The film your kids may already know by heart, and worth sitting down for yourself: a girl group who hunt demons between concerts, with songs adults end up humming too. Best from about eight; the demons can look menacing and the rival boy band flirts a lot.
My Neighbor Totoro
Movie · 1988The gentlest film on this list and the right one for a room with a three-year-old in it: two sisters, a new house in the country and a huge furry forest spirit. Their mother is in the hospital and the younger girl goes missing briefly near the end, but it never turns frightening.
Ratatouille
Movie · 2007Mostly about craft rather than peril, so it suits a room that doesn't want anything loud. Fine from about six, though the opening chase through a farmhouse and the sewers is tense, and Remy's father shows him a shop window full of dead rats in traps.
Back to the Future
Movie · 1985The live-action pick that converts every twelve-year-old who sees it. Parents who last watched it as kids should know there's more swearing than they remember, a shooting early on, and Biff, who has bullied Marty's father for years, forcing himself on Marty's teenage mother in a parked car. Best from about twelve.
Encanto
Movie · 2021Songs every kid in the house will already know, wrapped around a story about family expectations that hits parents harder than children. Good from about five. A flashback showing how the grandmother lost her husband is the one dark moment, and it's brief.
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
Movie · 2024A little under eighty minutes, so it fits a school night, and it spans a wide age range: kids laugh at Gromit's face, grandparents at Wallace's inventions. Best from about six, since the silent penguin villain and his marching army of hijacked garden gnomes can creep out preschoolers.
Zootopia
Movie · 2016A buddy-cop mystery starring a rabbit and a fox that works as a fast, funny caper for six-year-olds and as a sharp fable about prejudice for their parents. A few scenes of animals turning feral and chasing the heroes are genuinely scary for under-sixes, and flashbacks to the heroes' childhoods show both being bullied.
Wonka
Movie · 2023From the director of the first two Paddington films, and it shares their kindness: a young Willy Wonka arrives in a city run by a chocolate cartel. Good from about seven; the villains are cartoonish, but there's a gunpoint scene, Wonka misses his late mother and an orphan girl is mistreated. Hugh Grant's Oompa-Loompa is the adults' reward.
The Iron Giant
Movie · 1999Beautiful and genuinely sad: hunters shoot a deer partway through, and the ending upsets some younger children. Best from about seven up, and worth watching together rather than leaving on.
Moana
Movie · 2016A sea voyage with big songs and a heroine who never gets paired off with a love interest, which plenty of parents appreciate. Best from about seven: her grandmother's death, a lava monster in the finale and a giant crab who wants to eat the heroes can upset younger viewers.
Knives Out
Movie · 2019The pick for families with teenagers rather than small children: there's frequent strong swearing, a suicide shown in an early flashback, overdoses that drive the plot and a wealthy family's casual racism toward their nurse. Brilliant if the ages fit.
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Series · 2005The rare series that genuinely improves as it goes and treats its young audience as intelligent. Best from about eight: the war behind it includes a wiped-out people, Katara's mother was killed in a raid, and Zuko's scar came from his own father. The strongest long-form family pick here.
Bluey
Series · 2018Seven minutes an episode, and the only children's show on this list that adults regularly finish watching after the kids leave the room. Gentle throughout, though one episode about an injured bird that dies at the vet can prompt first questions about death.
Parks and Recreation
Series · 2009For families with teenagers: the TV option when nobody wants to commit two hours. Its heart is kind, but the jokes lean adult, with frequent sexual innuendo, drinking played for laughs and bleeped swearing, and the death of a beloved miniature horse is the one sad stretch. Funny for the adults.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine
Series · 2013For families with teenagers: half-hour episodes and a good-natured cast, easy to fit into a school night. Expect constant sex jokes, bleeped swearing and comic drug busts, plus a few serious episodes about racial profiling and a reported sexual assault that are worth watching together.
The Great British Bake Off
Series · 2010Zero conflict, gentle pace, and it reliably makes everyone want to bake. Nothing in it is scary, and the one thing parents notice is the hosts' running innuendo about buns and soggy bottoms, so it fits about eight and up better than a room of toddlers.
